The majority of people in Europe know a little bit of English. I'm sure he didn't mean he couldn't speak one word....he would know the basic phrases. He probably means its the first time speaking it on a regular basis, not just a few sentences here and there - using it in regular conversations (probably didn't explain it the best because his English isn't great )

Hes doing well, though it must be difficult in group chats to keep up. My other half is mediteranean, and I know what it was like for him many years ago...whenver you grasp the basics, people forget that its still quite a struggle to keep up when people are speaking quickly and interupting in group conversations.
