I would argue that's exactly what they did, sacrifice technique for comedy. Its how they stayed in so long. No where near as bad as the Russell Grant types of course, but Ed's routines were usually 50/50 on dance and comedy sketch as the series went on. He did try to make the 50% where he was dancing good, I'll certainly give him that, but Katya was covering his bad technique with smoke and mirrors over and over again. Saturdays Tango was, unlike their usual fair, mostly dance and it showed just how bad his technique was, but I think Katya was running out of ideas to mask it by then.
That all said he came over as a nice guy, earnest to learn to dance and try his hardest and I admire him for that. Also out of all the 'joke' contestants we have had over the years he was the closest to being a proper dancer.
