You are so right An! You need fats, proteins, carbs and all manner of minerals and nutrients to get well and remain well. Peanut butter on ricecakes or corn cakes comes to mind!

There should be detailed dietary advice with menus, suggestions, info about where to source the acceptable foods, etc.

Also oats....can you have porridge made with nut milks?

You can get non wheat pastas as well. I get them for herself and have eaten them. Perfectly nice with a tasty veggie sauce of tomatoes and bits and bobs. Can you have Quorn mince?

Thanks for the advice guys!!

I'm going to spoiler the answers so they don't take up the whole page and bore everyone to death.

Spoiler

To answer Twass first, i've been living on roasted peppers of late!!! have them with practically everything! in salads on pasta in veggie chilli they are everywhere! yes i have gluten free bread occasionally but as i can't have butter i don't eat it often, because well gluten free bread isn't that nice and is in fact only edible covered in butter and jam or marmalade i do have ryvita which are 100% rye and i have them dry (yummy ) with salad. Am only allowed 1/2 a cup of oats a week otherwise porridge would have been a go to lunch. Lunches are the most difficult. I do have wheat free pasta eaten it for years but there's a limit to how much i can eat of it. Can't have Quorn or meat substitute as it's a fungi.

Answering An, pulses and beans are a bit of a no no as they are high in purines which is what raises the uric acid levels. but every so often i have some chick peas or kidney beans just because i'm at a loss at what to eat. So i'll get some humous and eat it with a raw carrot. But i found some peanut butter made from 100% peanuts with no added anything and i drip that over a banana as part of my breakfast. I have tuna and cod/haddock but fish has to be limited to twice a week apparently so.....

I am allowed vegetable fats so olive oil mainly. I also have a raft of supplements i have to take vits A, C, D, cod liver oil and iodine.

The problem is i have my multiple problems, the condition for which i had all the operations which writes out any brassicas, fungi, wheat, refined carbohydrate, yeast, sugar, mould of any sort (like blue cheese for example) orange juice. I haven't eaten any of them since the 1990s. (apart from a garlic mushroom binge once a year! ) Then i have this recent uric acid nightmare which wipes out any food with purines. Which appears to be everything except strawberries and lettuce (i exaggerate but if you're interested the list of food with purines in is just horrific).

Things i have to eat every day because they are considered good for lowering uric acid (i'm doing everything to avoid hospital again i'd rather die than go back) are strawberries, banana, tart cherry juice, my lime juice, 3 litres of water, 4 cups of coffee, and for some reason no/low fat yoghurt is supposed to lower uric acid levels. It's a bastard because i've never done any of the things that cause high uric acid level like drink alcohol eat loads of shell fish and red meat etc all i did was have extended periods of fasting in hospital when i was on nil by mouth for weeks at a time and this is what's caused it

I was in M&S earlier and they had this £10 deal of this giant hand made pizza and a bottle of prosecco and i felt like grabbing it off the shelf and bingeing in the car park without even cooking it!!!!! I sometimes buy things i want to eat and make my mum eat them She lives on cake and double cream and only ever gets ill if she comes in contact with salad or lowers her butter and cream intake, her cholesterol is lower than mine and my GPs !!!! I'm so jealous!

I came up with an idea while shopping that i haven't cooked for ages which is sweet potato bhajis, that i bake rather than fry so there's very little fat: roasted sweet potatoes, roasted garlics , red onions and carrots in the bhaji batter (which is just gram flour and spices and water) eaten with no fat yogurt and salad!!! it will make a change anyway!

Crikey....bit of a nightmare The bhajias sound very tasty though! I guess you can also eat gram flour chappatis dry pan cooked with veg curry and rice. Can you have coconut oil? Said to be very nutritious, as is the nut and the milk

Yeah i invented them when my mum had a problem with her gall bladder and had to be low fat for a while she loves curry so i invented a bake rather than fry bhaji!

I used to make thai food with coconut milk and oil but then i got confused about whether i should be eating it because of the effect it could have on cholesterol because i have to limit a lot of hdl consumption the merest hint of ldl makes my cholesterol go mental. So i'm not sure what to d about it at the moment.

i love rice but it is classed as a refined carbohydrate so i have to limit how much i eat of it.

Can you see how it drives me nuts? It's so effing complicated!!! i've been going okay for 6 months or so but i just suddenly woke up this morning hating everything i've been eating.

Do you have the support of a dietician cos your needs are very complex? Avocadoes are said to reduce the bad sort of cholesterol, they are lush on crispbread or toast!

I spoke with a dietitian and a nutritionist in hospital and to be honest they were worse than useless. The medical issues i have are rare and they had no idea about them at all and kept suggesting foods that would make me really ill/hospitalise me! i do have the occasional avocado, i like to make guacamole!

Indeed either that or supply her with the nutricous white goo they feed people in intensive care. I don't suppose its a very enticing menu but at least they are being fed unlike our poor P.

Haven't read the spoiler yet. Hope there will be some comfort in there. If not I will have to share my left overs/ night before shopping supper which conatined no meat, wheat, milk, cheese etc and was a wierd combination of ingredients but not that bad.

Have lots of avocadoes! THey are very good for you. Either as guacamole or just mashed onto hot toast, you don't need butter. Bit of black pepper and lemon juice over and ....divine

Do you have those Ensure drinks? THey are pretty foul but they have all the good stuff in them.

Well the suppliments of Vitamin A C D cod liver oil etc are all very well but you could do with a protein tablet not to mention a few good old fashioned energy pills.

Tonight I had a weird meal and thought of you. It was lots of left over bits Baked potato filled with left over Aldi artichokes in herby olive oil and sweet corn (tinned) served with stir fried onions and cabbage with cumin and garlic. Plus some slow roasted beetroot slces. Odd but better than it sounded.

So fridge empty - Aldi tomorrow plus Birmingham markets. How about ratatouille Planets could you have that? Its the sheer lack of calories that concerns me really but if you did Rat the proper way stewed vegtables in olive oil that will give you some fuel. I will get some virtual treats of course.

They are rare which is why I feel you of all people need a good dietician who can take a holistic view. Its all very well one consultant saying avoid this this and this or you will be ill and another saying avoid that, the other and some such or you will be ill. Unless they coordinate, trying to avoid illness is pointlesss, because you will be ill through starvation.

Cor I love proper ratatouille.

I think a proper dietitcian would be able to take an overview and look into food combinations that would level each other out a bit. Also you need variety to give you an appetite. The same old same old, no wonder you don't fancy it.

Unusual sounding dinner An.....but I've often found odd mixtures are very nice!

I forgot i also have folic acid because of not being able to eat green things!

The trouble with protein is it raises the uric acid levels. When i had the big hole i was on a high protein diet to heal the wound, this may have contributed to the state i'm in now.

Ah the restrictions for gut were done by exclusion diet. So for six months lived on rice and limited known to be safe veggies and then when stabilised, introduced one food at a time to see which had a bad effect and made me ill.

The uric acid restrictions are a work in progress! But i am going by the mayo clinic advice as well as GP and rheumatologist. It's a last resort because the doctor wanted me to go into hospital because the levels were so high he was worried about kidney failure (hospital food would prove fatal if my experiences of it are anything to go by) i'm allergic to the medication so i had to come off it for 2 months but then levels were worse than before so i've had to go back on a lower dose of the stuff i'm allergic to (started at the weekend) and we're just waiting to see how ill i get on this reduced dose. It's all so boring

yes i often do a version of ratatouille!!! toms, courgettes onions and garlic.

I'm going to regret this aren't I? but .. What happens to sweetcorn in a stoma? I think I can hazard a guess because one uses sweetcorn to assess digestive transit. Something I meaned to have a look for this morning as it happens - I forgot and flushed! Can you add aubergine to your ratatouille. I have a feeling Aubergine is high in purines actually. Also it conatins quite high proportions of nicotine - little known fact there.

It was excruciating. My stoma had retracted (nothing ever works properly!!) and sweetcorn was like being stabbed in the stomach with a serrated knife repeatedly! i never knew aubergine had nicotine in!!!! i wonder if they ever recommend it for people trying to give up smoking?

So ..... now there is no stoma and your innards are connected back up and working sort of like a normal person's?

Sounds like you've had the expert advice I think we panicked a bit with the lettuce and strawberry diet

If sweetcorn comes out the other end more or less as it went in, are you getting the nutrients from it?

innards connected up with lots of sections missing and other bits permanently damaged, so will never work like a normal person *swoons in despair onto chaise longue dramatically*

re sweetcorn, not sure i'm guessing not much nutrition but they make the stuff i don't like (fish) taste nice and they are on the very short list of Good Foods
anything which tastes nice that i can eat i will eat

Just nipping out for 20lbs of aubergines hasn't quite the same ring to it, has it

Well I suppose having a more or less working digestive tract is SOMETHING. Are cornflakes OK? After all, they are made from corn? Cornflakes are lush

YOu can make all sorts with them But they are smashing just squashed onto hot toast, with a squirt of lemon juice or lime and black pepper. No salt necessary. I've converted quite a few peeps to this culinary delight They even sex up a salad.
