I prefer a physical book myself.
There's something about reading off a screen that stop me from getting totally "lost" in the book - if you know what i mean. I know they are really convenient and useful etc but i just don't like them. There's something about physical books - even when they are so well read they are falling apart - that i just adore. I love second hand books when people have written little messages to the recipient of the book.

Regarding the light issue before i went in for my op i got a Mighty Bright book light so i wouldn't disturb anyone with my overhead light if i wanted to read, and it is fab! I use it in bed as i light quite low light. Also useful as a torch during an unexpected powercut.
And the books smell booky! ( I seem to be channelling Russel Brand today )

To be honest at present I am at the stage where I can read still in low light but its harder work and I am apt to put the book to one side. Daylight is fine and a good reading light too. Also some cheap magnifying glasses do the trick but they feel alien and I don't need them for other things so create as many problemns as they solve.

I will have a look at the Mightly Bright book light. It sounds like a present idea for future reference.

Hi Russell *waves* YES!!!!! love the booky smell!!!

Can recommend the mighty bright, it was so light (in weight) it even clipped onto magazines successfully!! Also during the power cuts it meant i could at least read at night without spilling candle wax everywhere!

Hello all, happy NYE Eve! Well that was an interesting 24+ hours, this time yesterday I was sure we were in for it, then Frank veered south again and we were let off the worst. Only lost a few branches, and had to spend the day mending some holes in the cows' big shed, we were lucky. Now awaiting Gertrude

While we have power, I must get some dinner x

Hope you are all ok and dry x

This whole business of giving the damned things names seems like adding insult to injury to me.

Not to mention it being worse for the guvmint. As you say, they would once just have had to take the flak for more or less one event. Now it's three separate ones that they can be beaten over the head for.

can't say i'm bothered by that.

my sympathies lie with the poor buggers who have been flooded out three times in as many weeks and for all the chat and pr nonsense about aid budgets they are still waiting for their insurance claims from the floods six years ago to be paid. it's a disgrace.

^^^ This. It's shocking and we need to look after all the flood victims in this country. If there's money to bomb Syria there's money for floods!!!

Giles says thank you and has shared them with his ladies, feel a bit guilty that our animals are all warm, dry and well (mind you it takes year round planning) and we have just finished a big dinner. Roast beef and gravy, with veg, Yorkshires and roasties for any veggies present.

Opened the first Quality Street of the season, pile in everyone
