Now THAT i remember. I preferred the Judd and Proudie (sp?) from the old series to the new series. I loved Robin Ellis too!!!
Can't disagree regarding Mr Turner but i do think it's the character that adds to his allure. If he was playing George Warleggan, for example i don't think i'd be keen.

Indeed, Warleggan is a skunk however you dress him up. The old Judd and Prudie were the best! I also preferred the old Demelza although in the books she should have dark hair and eyes. Instead we got two redheads!

Warleggan is even more sluglike in this than the first series *shudders*
Angharad Rees with Aidan Turner would be good!!! She was so very charismatic wasn't she? with an amazing twinkle she was great!

Yes, she had that part down perfectly. A tough act to follow....and she being so petite would make Aidan look even hunkier, Eleanor Tomlinson is a bit tall for the part imho....otherwise good, but she does lack the twinkle!!

I read an article in the spectator earlier () and it was about how all the films and tv have lost their sense of fun these days.....and i had to agree*. Everything is so serious, this new version of Poldark hasn't got the twinkle of the old series.

I didn't see Detectorists although many have said how good it was.....I don't generally watch that much TV. Do you remember the Onedin Line? That was brilliant and full of fun.

i have been eulogising about Detectorists as much as i have Vikings!! I think Sleeps gave it a go after reading my comments and came in around new year to say how much he had enjoyed it!! But i recommend it heartily, it's very gentle, very funny and beautifully written and performed. The thread on it was quite the nicest happiest thread i've ever taken part in!!!

I'm quite picky about what i watch on telly. If there's nothing i specifically want to watch on i don't turn it on. I didn't miss it all when i was in hospital for all those months and when i got to my mum's and finally had access to a telly i didn't turn it on for two weeks

Dad fell in love with Demelza It was perfectly obvious to me, the mini observer Programmes for adults were fine for kids to watch in those days, there was no sex other than the odd smouldering embrace fully clothed [often in hats and gloves as well ] and no cuss words other than a genteel damn.

I LOVED FLAMBARDS!!!!! i was totally in love with Mark (not so much in the first book but in Flambards Divided i adored him - ironically i ended up suffering very similar problems to him medically !!!) *

It was Dick the stable boy I loved Mark was the rotter brother wasn't he, Will was the young aviator.....another classic series from about 1977 or so....and I totally admired Christina All these series had very strong women in them. Thus appealing to both sexes

Dick was lovely in the first book/tv series but in the second book he turned into a right erm....******.

You can always watch again, and again. I love those first two episodes. The scene setters! And when Ragnar and lagertha were still simple farmers. Blimey, 2am....do you never sleep

I love the George Martin books although they are LONG Apparently he's missed the deadline to publish the Winds of Winter before the TV adaptation goes out

i liked the first George martin book i couldn't wait to read the second, which wasn't quite as good. By the third he was getting self indulgent and by the time we got to pages of lists of pretendy food in Dorne he had lost the plot. It was an act of will to finish the series. My theory is his ego took control once he got some success and hasn't allowed an editor to work on his books since volume 2. The publishers agreed because he's raking in the money. The writing is now terrible, virtually unreadable. I also found his obsession with doggy style a bit odd *whistles innocently*

The GOT series certainly goes downhill from book 1 and I suspect you are right with your comments But like you I was determined to read the lot. The TV series deviates quite a bit but I love it Tyrion is of course my favourite, followed by Jon Snow. Who's yours?

George Martin is the author of that Game of Thrones stuff, right? (I've had my head under a rock for the last few years). He seems very popular, but I've never seen the appeal after watching bits of bobs of the television series. I think I was turned off immediately when he was described as "the American Tolkien". The British one was difficult enough to stomach for me(!).

I have a friend who is an avid reader of his stuff (if it is the same person I'm thinking of), but said the author was, "a bit of a douche". But I didn't have this friend down as someone who'd read a lot, so if he is getting teenagers and adults back into reading, I can't be too angry with him.

(I'm sure he'd be thrilled to use that as an endorsement on his next book, "bit of a douche apparently, but I can't be too angry with him..." - noodkleopatra)

Now i've watched the first series of GoT (i think i was on book three when i was bought the dvds as a pressie) but the books got so bad it put me off watching the rest of the series. I keep hovering over box sets in amazon....and then remembering the books and leaving the page unclicked

I agree with the it's good getting kids to read aspect.
Have you ever read anything so appalling it physically hurts to read though? that's what it was like by the end of reading the series for me
