Hot Sauce
Hi all,
I'm going through a bit of a Hot Sauce phase at the moment and wondered if anyone could recommend some more good ones. Current faves are: Sriracha (all varieties but especially Extra Garlic) Cholula (chilli and garlic) 'Vampire Slayer' from the Isle of Wight Garlic Farm (can be ordered online) I prefer sauces that are flavoursome rather than just blow-your-socks-off but I welcome any suggestions!

Well your top two are my favourites also. It used to be Cholula but Sriracha has taken top spot.
There's the usual suspects such as Encona. The West Indian might just be at your level. Heinz also do a nice range. They're more for a dash or sprinkle of heat. I like the tangy one (green) and the fruity habanero (orange). |

Maggi Hot Chilli Sauce is my favourite
widely available in supermarkets and Asian shops................I use it as a poring on sauce like Ketchup or HP..................particularly good on baked beans, cold meats like corned beef and sausage sandwiches Can also add to stir fries although I prefer Patak's Chilli Pickle for that...............just stir half a forkful through before serving..........I find it too hot to serve as a side of the plate pickle |

Not a fan of Frank's... until I tried Frank's Red Hot Chilli & Lime! Not that hot but the combination with lime makes it perfect for smothering on chips!
![]() My other current favourite in terms of heat is a cheap bottle of 'Louisiana' Perfect Hot Sauce but I buy a couple of bottles of different varieties a month and the cheap brands tend to be of a similar level of heat. Encona do a great range but I will be looking for any suggestions moving forward! ![]() Just to note that in terms of bang for buck you can't go wrong with Sriracha

Thanks everyone for your replies so far. Yesterday I went a bit 'hot sauce mad' and bought a few different bottles. My favourite by far is 'Star' Bajan Pepper Sauce; yellow in colour, tastes like Scotch bonnets so very reminiscent of jerk chicken and Caribbean cooking in general, and EXTREMELY hot! Definitely recommended; I got mine in the local ethnic supermarket.

I'm not generally a fan of chilli, but I bought a bottle of this for enhancing disappointing curries. All I can say is, apply it one drop at a time with something like an eye dropper, rather than a spoon. A teaspoon full in even a large pot of curry would melt your eyeballs. Even then I believe it isn't even the strongest you can get!

I quite like some chilli in my food but the Encona West Indian one is far too hot for me. A few drops is enough to blow my brains out.
The Maggi Malaysian chilli sauce (not the Extra Hot one) is much more to my taste and is perfect for spicing up noodles and stir fries. |

We always have a bottle of Encona at home, I must be desensitised because I don't find it that hot at all! Love it with chicken.
I'm probably very late but I can't believe that they're making hot sauce with a pipette dropper http://www.amazon.co.uk/Psycho-Juice...92CFCPTYX022G2 Nah not for me, I don't think I'd like anything that hot. |

The Heinz one are good value, and enjoyable. Nando's peri peri is good.
Dave's Insanity was the hottest I tried. Too hot, really Red tabasco is always good, but seems to evaporate out of a closed bottle |

![]() They range from the ones been mentioned here, sweet chilli sauces, smokey sauces (chipolte), one that are more vinegary etc. Some thin, some thicker, some sryupy. Even a wasabi hotsauce. They all have different uses. Also they're not going to go off so fine to keep a good selection to hand. One that will be there for a while is a bottle of Dave's Insanity Sauce. I've probably used a few mililitres and it's been in there for several years now

My favourite in the hot-but-not-so-insanely-hot-you-can't taste-anything-else category is the Cholula Chipotle flavour. Hot enough for a kick, but a nice blend of other flavours as well, kind of like English mustard. I use Encona as a kind of booster to upgrade underpowered supermarket ready meals. A few drops of tabasco will also upgrade a dollop of tomato ketchup.

They have the regulars but also Louisianna Hot Sauce, Maggi, Linghams and some other brands that are not usually found in many supermarkets (especially up here where sometimes it's been years to get products that are available in the same places in other parts of the country) |
