Congrats to Peter and Janette on an outstanding week and well-deserved scores for their charleston.
2b. Georgia & Giovanni
Thought the music and cosmopolitan feel provided a warm, hospitable invitation to the temperate coastal setting of Positano, Italy, complete with pastel-colored terraced homes perched atop overlooking the performance. Gio's retracted left hip at the very top, the slight hesitation after the first promenade runs (arm fans), the flurry of samba steps by Georgia at the studio corner, and the floating balletic arms of Gio gracing the camera path afterwards, were great scenic attractions to pull over for and to admire from afar. Its nice that Gio was able to quickly grab and reorient a perplexed Georgia afterwards (and facing away from the judges too) and credit to Georgia for adjusting and maintaining her bearings despite the hiccup. Thought Georgia could've kept her shoulders slightly down during the raised arm pose at the studio corner, as it did make her look a bit small and compact (a bit more texture in her hands on Gio's face at the dining table would've been nice too, as opposed to a facial wipedown). A bit relieved that Giovanni didn't put in another series of batucadas, as the difficult step didn't seem as polished when performed at the studio corner. Still would like to see the couple perform a deep, heartfelt, emotional number somewhere down the line, but enjoyed seeing the color in their samba performance.
2b. Helen & Aljaz
Think Helen carried out the steps well and performed the moves that Aljaz choreographed to the best of her abilities. Enjoyed the leg wraps during the drag at the very top and the tension in the room the couple created in the studio. Given her tall stature, nice hip mobility in previous dances, I was looking forward to seeing the expressive spine moving sensually on her back during the rumba steps. Though it was a bit of a letdown to see it covered, I thought and felt that the rumba was the one dance where she could've showed a bit more emotional connection with Aljaz. Perhaps the music choice, choreography, lack of shapely figures may have been a factor, but I also thought she needed to get more earthy in the floor to create an even more believeable love story. Thought she was a bit upright in this dance, but hope this will be the one style that they can cross off the season list and start anew. Still not sure if it was a good idea to end the routine with the sketchy opening out steps where Helen rocked her hips (Bruno), as there was still much real estate that the hips could've covered and explored. Think the couple has so far been consistent and will hopefully move onto other styles that will best suit their taste and temperament.
2a. Jay & Aliona
Thought there were some nice timely foot lines/displacements, the sultry, caressing circular volcada sweep on the floor, spectacular lifts (from which Aliona looked and felt comfortable) and savory leg decorations (leg brushing) by Aliona. However, I felt that Jay's posture, eye glance and mannerisms at the very top, sort of conveyed the reciprocating attempt of seducing the town mistress; at times, it seemed a bit mundane, non-chalant, and almost business-like. Toe taps seemed a hair forced (could come off a bit more improvised), with kicks/flicks needing a bit lighter, sharper movement in the knee flex. Thought Aliona followed her blueprint with her former partner Harry, by presenting the lady front and center in moments of the choreography. More importantly, I was searching for that intense, sensual relationship between the two lovers throughout the routine, but thought the one-dimensional emotion and the careful, formal feel of the routine left me empty and yearning for more. Nonetheless, think its great that the couple is continually fashioned and weathered by a measure of stress through the weeks, and enjoy and appreciate the effort the couple is putting out on the floor thus far.
Best of luck to all the celebs and looking forward to their dances.
