EE: Tamwar's aspirations of university
Completely dead now? Happy to be a market assistant (or whatever his job is) forever? Surely someone clever enough to almost get into Oxford would aspire to train for a more fulfilling career?

I'm certain they have or will be doing the same with Abi and her past hopes of university. When it comes to Tamwar, he is probably earning a decent salary and gained a lot of work skills from a young age on the market. I think Zainab and Denise were competitive about their kids going to uni, though at the time maybe Dee thought she got the last laugh as Libby went to Oxford. Uni isn't the only option at the end of your A-Levels. There are plenty of other avenues.
I *think* Shabnam (pharmacy) and Sonia (nursing/midwifery) are the only current characters who are uni-educated. Johnny was attending before deferring a year and leaving the Square (I assume he will resume his studies if not already). |

Yes if he gets a decent salary, why throw in a steady job, for an expensive education, with no guarantee of a good paying job upon graduation.

Not that employment prospects are the only reason for seeking further education obviously, but of course they're a major one. |

Why they couldn't just say Tam and abi went to a local university beats me. Whitney was training in child care, Lee was training to be a plumber but both of these have been dropped. They like the characters to be around the square, but all they needed was to put up a sign that says Walford nursery on a house on George Street and get Lee a white rusty van and then they have jobs that would still allow them to be around Walford during the day.
Someone like Ian could run their own employment agency, convert one of the shops and all you'd need is a desk or two like Butcher Joints. Abi could be a receptionist. I think Max would make for a great estate agents so there is another business opportunity. I'm fed up of everyone either being cooks, bar staff or stallholders. They need to shake it up a bit. |

Yeah, plenty of people in London go to local universities and still live at home, so it isn't outside the realms of possibility to show that. But I guess you'd probably be hanging around with your uni mates and not the deadbeats on the square.
And even if someone got a degree, they'd end up on a stall. Shabnam has a degree and could be a pharmacist but she'd rather man the till at the MinuteMart. Didn't Bradley have a degree? |

It's where EE is so downmarket. You can't have popular characters actually making something of themselves through education. Folks with money are criminals and/ or nasty. Wasn't always the case. Take Michelle Fowler had baby at sixteen but sat her GCSE in hospital. Eventually went to University and graduated. Wouldn't run a story like that nowadays.

I doubt that very much. More likely a dead end low paid job with little prospects.

I think they tend to leave the 'Uni' storyline in the back-pocket for if they need to write a character out even though they could very easily have characters going to a local Uni (they hardest part would be for them to come up with a fake Uni name that's not already been taken - University College London - Gone, London Met - Gone, Uni of East London - Gone, Thames Valley - Gone.....)
It's not just Uni though - the whole employment idea for people living in Walford is pretty unrealistic. They've actually got a tube station on the square - and yet no-one actually works outside of Albert Square. Of course, having a character just disappear for 8 hours a day would be awkward to build a storyline around. The only thing I could come up with at the moment would be a young family with one parent working in the city, the other a stay-at-home parent looking after a child and a potential for an affair with someone. |

This is what really pisses me off about EE. Like many have said, they could've just said Tamwar and Abi are going to a London uni. Queen Mary University is in east London and would actually only be a handful of stops from Walford. Plus, they could do some on location filming which would be nice, as I go there myself! But seriously, someone like Tam wouldn't just give up and work on the market, it's just a cop out imo. They need to stop treating university as some idea for the elite only, over 2 million people go, and it's becoming very common, even for low income families.

I'm sure she completed her studies and passed her exams. Stacey is qualified, but is stuck on a stall because of her falling out with Dean. I thought Paul was on a gap year from uni, but that seems to have been forgotten.
When Dean leaves I presume Roxy will take ownership of Blades and so I hope they build on her staff. Putting Syacey back in there could be good. |

Completely agree. University isn't always necessary to have a decent career. As a graduate, I feel like I would be in a better position, if I hadn't of gone to uni.

It's quite easy to show someone at a London uni as students aren't at lectures all day and they could easily still be in storylines in Walford during the day.
Alas, the only way anyone on EE will go to uni is if a university opens on the Square. |

Michelle Fowler went to University in London and lived on Square. In the days of realism.

Tamwar has probably given the idea up as any time he gets even the slightest hope of going there is no money because it has to go to bail his feckless parents out of their financial difficulties. Even Shabnams going away money ended up being donated to the parental cause. Tamwar has always been bottom of the pecking order in the family, just like Billy in his, That sort of treatment destroys self confidence and that's why Tamwar always has this air of resignation about him. It was only Nancy,s questioning coaxing and support that he went for the job and got, but his insecurities still show in his handling of confrontation with the traders who just dismiss him. If he did go to uni he would thrive and blossom but he just can't get close to it.
