I was just about to create one myself, but I don't need to now. Looking forward to seeing Reece Shearsmith in this one. The Last time I saw him in DW, he played Patrick Troughton in Mark Gatiss' 50th Anniversary drama nearly two years ago.

Interesting episode. The idea of Coffee monsters who kill people by keeping them awake, as their body dies from lack of sleep, was inspired. I voted Excellent.

Good choices. I would add 'Night Terrors', personally. Think it's a rather underrated tale, beautifully directed. Probably rate it above 'Cold War', which was solid enough but a bit too generic for my tastes. The others I don't *dislike*, but not on my rewatch list. AAISAT was beautifully done.

I probably need to give Night Terrors another watch but I remember not being very impressed with it when I watched it the first time. I agree about AAISAT, you can really sense the love for the show pouring from the writing of that.

Generally I find Gatiss episodes to be safe and solid enough, they don't really light up the screen and leave me dumbstruck but neither do I hate any of them. Probably my least favourite of the bunch is Robot of Sherwood but romps in Doctor Who have never really floated my boat.

Also in Gatiss's defence I'm sure I read somewhere that he's usually given quite tight restrictions on what he has to include in his episodes, i.e. he was told to write a light hearted romp featuring Robin Hood, so that's what he did and of course he was lumbered with the tellytubby Daleks in Victory and I think Spitfires in space was also a prerequisite. (Or I could just be making all that up).

Also as a completely random aside (well not quite completely) I'd love to see two of Gatiss's fellow League of Gentlemen, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith have a crack at writing an episode. Although I think I read somewhere that Reece doesn't even watch Doctor Who, which is shame because I felt there were lots of similarities with Inside No.9.

Is that true? I am surprised. Like you say they're a great fit to write something for Who. Can't wait to see Reece Shearsmith finally appear either way. That'll be 3/4 for League of Gentleman appearances .

I enjoyed The Unquiet Dead and The Crimson Horror a lot. And whilst I don't think it was particularly well written I enjoyed Robot of Sherwood for its performances.

At any rate Gatiss penning a future set story is new territory - which is a bit surprising given his written involvement of seven out of nine series. As such I really don't know what I'll make of this - the trailer for it didn't entice me very much at all, but then Series 9 has so far surprised me at each and every turn.

Well he can't be that against it since he's starring in this episode. Also, as we know steve was also in an episode.

Just because one or both may not be big fans, doesn't mean they wouldn't be willing to write for it. The fact that they've both now acted in episodes seems to prove that.

That story makes some of the more recent ones look like BAFTA for me

I personally think that if enough people want an earlier thread, it doesn't matter that much does it? If there's a market for it, the people who'd rather it was started later can just dip in later. The only thing that matters is that someone reliable sets up the poll and lotrjw has proved reliable in the past. Also the tactic of griping on the thread every week doesn't seem to be working or helping.


Entirely depends on your definition of decent and your personal opinions on the following episodes:


I've not seen AAiSaT but I wouldn't say any of those Who eps are "good". I'd call Cold War and maybe Robot "decent" but neither of them are above average and the rest are IMHO not very good at all.

(Also I'm glad someone else started the Gatiss debate because I think this episode is going to be awful and I didn't want to be the first to admit I really don't like Gatiss' writing).
