I just can't pin down what it is that's happening with me. It might just be that I'm growing up and I'm busy with other things to devote myself to Doctor Who as I used to. I've got every episode up to Day of the Doctor, anniversary special. I want to get "time" but I refuse to get it along with other Christmas specials along with the ones I already own. I'd rather buy it separate or with Season 8. I believe it's not included.

I look fondly on the earlier series. Nostgalgia and harsh as it may be I think of them as more entertaining!

Series 6 onwards.

While still liking the show as some of the more original story-telling on UK tv, there is something to be said for just a standalone lark of an adventure with a beginning, a middle and an end without the Earth/extended Whoniverse being in perpetual peril depending on what the Doctor does or doesn't invariably end up doing.
'A Christmas Carol' was a standalone story a bit like that.

To watch it sometimes, you'd think that the Doctor was the most well-known urban legend in the entirety of time & space with an assorted cast of enemies determined to stop him and bring down the universe in the process. Does every story really have to be of the scale of redeeming the Doctor's own back-story or saving his people or an always vulnerable planet Earth from destruction? But then again, they are making TV drama!

But I'd always thought that "The Doctor" was supposed to be a mysterious intergalactic traveller, who wasn't known to the wider population. These days it appears everyone knows about him! Good for the ratings, I suppose!

I wholeheartedly agree. (Except for the two-parters bit, I prefer the longer stories.)

Not a massive fan of the 2 parters but I don't mind them if they are needed,this last Zygon one just seemed a bit stretched over 2 parts and could easily have been a stand alone episode.

I agree, it was a very nice flounce, nicely executed. As an expert in flounces I'd give it 7 out of 10.

The Uranus line was very good. Perfectly timed.

I agree with you mate it's still a lot of fun as far as I'm concerned and Capaldi is a great Doctor.

It depends on your definition of "fun".

For some people, their definition of fun is being in the audience of the X-Factor grand final. For me, that would bore and insult the tits clean off me. I'd prefer to be in the mosh-pit of a Metallica gig, which for other people would be hell.

It's no different for Doctor Who. The general public will probably prefer their clean-cut, sexy David Tennant running around after the cute and cuddly Adapose. Others will prefer the cynical bastard that is Peter Capaldi playing politics between an alien race and humans.

Horses for courses.

Of course, only one is a ratings winner.

For me the last "fun" episode was The Girl Who Died.

But that's okay, not every episode is supposed to be "fun", Who wouldn't have lasted 50 years if every episode was "fun", every so often we need a bit of something different and the Zygon two-parter delivered this in spades.

Actually, I can kinda see the OP's point, Who this series has had a lot of slightly more thoughtful episodes this season. The opening two-parter definitely had fun moments sprinkled in but overall there was a lot of heavy, morbid themes of mortality going on. Ep 3 was very creepy and Ep 4 mind-boggling and they were both dealing with themes of mortality as well. Eps 5 and 6 I suppose were the fun ones, as I said I found Ep 5 very, very fun. And then the war/politics slant in Eps 7 and 8. Even so, there were lots of fun moments sprinkled throughout these stories for me and if you're not enjoying the humorous little moments in every ep and if the plotlines aren't captivating you then I suppose that that's just personal opinion and nothing necessarily wrong with the show, although I can totally understand how what you want from the show and what you're getting from the show diverging would make you frustrated.
