I think they really started to up their game up a bit with the
Series 3 Part 2 trailer. It was only a 'next time' kind of trailer so not overly flashy but it teased very well. My only problem is that to make things more dramatic they 'deepened' Timothy's voice at the end - admittedly Thomas Brodie Sangster's voice was breaking at the time (as you can hear in
Human Nature/The Family of Blood) but it was a little jarring.
Series 4 definitely had the best trailers... a great balance of cinematic and teasing without being overly revealing. The
first trailer was my favourite, though again they did a great job for
Series 4 Part 2. Then it hit a bit of a peak with
The Stolen Earth trailer which was very good, and then the
Journey's End one which was even better - I recall my family spotting these and it remains one of only two times they've ever shown an interest in Doctor Who.
The End of Time trailers for
Part One still make me wonder how a trailer can be so good for something so awful. It's still somewhat depressing to think about now.
I quite like the
Series 5 trailer, apart from the ridiculous 'end is only the beginning' tagline.
And I really love the trailer for
A Christmas Carol, which used some of my favourite Series 5 music again... the episode was good in the end too.
The
Series 6 trailer was the only other one that ever got my family interested in the show. In reflection it made the bad stuff from the series look much more impressive than it was, but the good stuff in Series 6 lived up to it.
I thought the Series 7 trailer for
Part 1 was awful, but then the series itself is also my least favourite. The one for
Part 2 was far better, but the
fan version* that has come out since is hilariously better in a way that means I'll never take that whole thing seriously again

The trailers for
Series 8 and
Series 9 have been fine... amazingly cinematic, especially the latter. They do a good job at teasing the series...I'd say that they have mostly lived up to what they've shown as well, though agree that "same old, same old" is not the kind of thing that makes for good marketing.
