So another greatest challenge ever,, how many of those can one person have

Another impossible task.. which always turn out to be not that impossible actually

Another Final test.. oh so is this the end then...

Fearsome creature.. you mean like the Fisher King, get ready to shake in your boots

Trapped in a world unlike any other he has seen.. have they got some new corridors

If he makes it through Galifrey awaits.. ah so he makes it through then

(why yes I am in a sarcy mood)

So I guess Day of the Doctor wasn't his greatest most important super duper day ever anymore... as this episode will be his greatest challenge, but wait what about Trenzalore! or Demon Run! or the End of Time! or the Time of the Doctor! what about this series opener being in the most dangerous place the Doctor could EVER be, a Dalek City! no wait the most dangerous place was at the end of the universe (which wasn't all that dangerous) no wait it was that other place, no it wasn;t it was actually this other place.. but then it wasn't and it became another place... AH!

Can they just say someone is dangerous or a place is dangerous or something is going to be a challenge without resorting to the inane THIS IS HIS GREATEST (insert whatever) IN THE HISTORY OF THE SHOW AND THE DOCTORS LIFE... until next week that's is, when there will be a new THE GREATEST MOST AWSOME...you get the point

Well they can't really say "The Doctor faces a teeny bit of bother this week, not much to worry about as he's faced far worse and he'll sort it all out easily, but hey, it's gonna be quite a good episode, sort of".

But I take your point - you can only have a couple of Greatest Fear / Peril / Danger / Tasks etc before all the hyperbole starts to sound a bit, well, silly.
And we are quite some distance past that point aren't we?

It's tricky though - how do they push forthcoming episodes without it all sounding a bit daft?

Well its all in the wording, you can sell something being exciting without it being or saying its THE GREATEST THREAT EVER type stuff. Its lazy hyperbole writing to market something.

You don't need to go oh this isn't as a big a threat as that last thing, of course not that's dumb, you sell it by giving a taste of what should be (hopefully) a interesting adventure/story, did Blink/Midnight need to go oh this is the greatest challenge EVER, no it had an interesting concept so they can give you a taste of that and it well intrigue the audience and get them to watch.

A synopsis of a interesting story is enough to get people interested, the fact they resort to such hyperbole suggest to me that they are a little insecure about what they have to offer (talking in a general ep not specific to this ep) or perhaps they have just slipped into this bad habit. But I do think in the long run it has a negative effect, it certainly as on me at-least as when ever I hear this from DW (and its usually DW that is the big offender for this type of thing) my eyes just roll and it creates a disconnect as I don't but into it and dismiss it as rubbish, which isn't good promotion.

The sad thing is its not just the marketing but in the show itself and that has the same effect where I just zone out and don't buy it cause how can you, its ludicrous, just tell interesting entertaining stories and the show promotes itself it will make us want to come back to see more interesting entertaining stories, we don't need to be convinced that this is the most IMPORTANT AND AWSOMES AND GREATEST EVENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE SHOW to validate what we are watching and make people want to see it, just tell great stories. Its a dumbed down approach IMO.

I think that kind of hyperbole comes across as unintelligent and immature. I can't think of any other drama where there's such a drive to have the "biggest" thing ever happen.

And yet according to the BBC, "the Doctor faces the greatest challenge of his many lives. One final test."

One final test.

What else can that possibly mean? The BBC said it, and they said it's final....

It's his last final test; The Doctor dies permanently and next series is about a transexual Zygon with an amputated arm with the name of 'Akmed'. He reads some online forum and hears about someone called 'The Doctor'. He meets Rose Tyler, Martha Jones and Donna Noble, all in bed with Jack Harkness, joins in and hears yet more about The Doctor. (Venom sacs in the tongue)

He then goes to his doctor for his yearly checkup.
