I've been reading, and occasionally posting, since the Ramprakash year.

Every year there have been posts and threads about some of the contestants which have made me at the level of venom and negativity directed against them. It's not something which is unique to this year.

It does strike me that moving the appreciation threads 'upstairs' means that there's a lot less positivity in the main forum, and - although I sometimes got frustrated in trying to find more general threads, when the first page was mainly full of the appreciation threads! - they did go some way towards diluting the 'negativity' .

I'd also agree that press interest has increased - with an emphasis on the press digging out - or making up - negative stories.

Standards in journalism generally have noticeably fallen since 2006 (IMO). When the press - even the so-called 'serious press' - can't get basic facts right on serious news stories, what chance is there that they'll bother checking facts on stories about reality TV shows?

Spot on you two.

I am more offended by the criticism and condemnation of posters here, than by any person in SCD.

I thought it had actually been pretty tame this year. Every year has it's negativity. Multiple threads were made criticising Allisons weight, a million and one "I hate Bruce" threads, the crazy reaction to Pixies departure, every year has people going way over the top over certain people going back to the early series.

Lots of contributors appear to have an axe to grind with the contestants. eg They hate people / quote tabloid press rubbish - Peter is a liar/ Jay and Aliona having an affair- even though she was just recently married/ Katie is too posh/ Kristina steals husbands- (even though the men were willing) .
The reason I feel this has happened is that they are "refugees" from reality shows like the X factor and Celebrity Big brother. where you have to hate certain contestants. Cue the dreadful screaming and baying for young people to be eliminated from X Factor The tabloid press used to ignore Strictly.

Now it is more popular than the X factor, they have to write something in their dreadful papers and so they start on the celebs. People read these and think it is true and and then regurgitate it on here. Everyone has favourites. I like Jeremy but understand that he will have to go soon, if better dancers are eliminated. The way this forum is moving is not good at all. Have your opinions but stop this hatred and vitriol”

I've been here a long time and I was a lurker but not registered for many years before that (in the days of the old BBC boards when DS was only used to leak the spoiler) and it's no different now than it ever has been and, in the case of this year's contestants, it's been fairly mild.
It has nothing to do with Celebrity BB or Xfactor. If you think this is bad, you clearly didn't see anything the year Kelly Brooke was a contestant. Think that's still the record year for people being perma banned both on the old Beeb message boards and here on DS.

She did have a good week and I would be happy if she shared the job with Karen because as much as I like the other pros, Jo was the best. The producers must give her a celeb next year.

It is the nature of forums, sadly. Given the opportunity to hide their true identity behind an assumed name, some people take advantage of that to spit out all manner of bile that they would not dare utter to someone's face. To my mind, that is cowardly behaviour. No doubt I will be vilified for expressing that view - but at least the name next to this post really is mine.

I get tired of posters claiming that they 'hate' this celebrity or that dancer. I hate monsters like Adolf Hitler or Saddam Hussein. I certainly don't hate television personalities whom I have never met and have never done me any harm.

Back in the old days when this forum was pink (remember that?) there wasn't an Appreciation Section. So threads full of glowing praise were obvious and gave a good balance to the forum. Now these positive threads are tucked away in a sub-forum (where I never remember to go) and all that is left are the negatives. I think that is why it appears to have got worse.

Very well put David. Echoes my sentiments exactly.

Couldn't have put it better myself, David.

It's the same every year; tiresome regurgitations of the 'smug', 'false', 'too quiet', 'too loud' etc accusations by keyboard warriors who hide behind their anonymity. It's the curse of the internet (and more so Twitter); people who, if they came face to face with the object of their vitriol wouldn't dare spout any of it to them.

And it's also, to a degree, pack mentality. If you get two or three of the same mindset, they automatically believe they are right to behave in this way and have every right to do so.

It"s a very sad reflection of today"s society, where decency and manners seem to have been replaced by the 'me, me me' mentality, spurred on by the redtops and others and their tacky excuse for 'journalism'.

It's a wider problem than these boards. They are just the tip of a bigger iceberg.
