Emmerdale Favourite Families
Storm_Shaker
09-11-2015
Out of the major families that have appeared on Emmerdale throughout it's 43 year history, who have been your favourites? and which families do you classify as a main family?
For me the main families are (in order of first appearance) - The Sugdens, Bates, Tates, Windsors, Dingles, Glovers, Thomas', Blackstocks, Kings, Bartons, Sharmas, and Whites.

Personally I don't think families such as the McAllisters, Cairns, Reynolds, Daggarts, Calder-Westons (Soapstar family), Marsdens, Sinclairs, Wyldes, Maceys or Spencers are major families due to their short lengths of time, small family size, their little/no legacy or lack of storylines/interesting characters (however I have counted the Whites because they've only recently arrived and I think they have the making of a classic major family).

In order of favourite to least favourite, my list is -
- Windsors
- Blackstocks
- Thomas'
- Kings
- Sugdens
- Tates
- Dingles
- Whites
- Glovers
- Bartons
- Bates
- Sharmas

What are your opinions on the families of Emmerdale?

The Tates - Chris was a nasty piece of work, but he was fun to watch, just like Kim. Liked Zoe.

The Wyldes - Liked Natasha and Nathan.

The Kings - Liked them all, apart from the wooden Matthew (I wasn't at all gutted when he got killed off, unlike Carl). And it's a pity that Jimmy lost his ruthless streak and became more of a buffoon, over the years.

The Bartons - Like Moira (n spite of becoming a Dingle) and the much maligned Adam. Ross (of course, in spite of being dragged down by the Debbie/Charity/Pete feud crap) and underused Finn. I only like Emma, due to her dislike of the Dingles.

Can't stand the Dingles.

My favourite family are the Whites (except Lachlan he is creepy lol) I think that they are a great addition to the show.

I adore the Dingles

I like the Pollards as well.

The girls urban family set up.

The Tates were amazing though. I wanted to grow up and be just like Kim when I was wee, I still do.

I like the Pollards/Metcalfe's.

I love the Whites.

I love the Bartons, most of them at least. Finn is so underused.

I loved the Wylde's, their storyline is what brought me into the show in the first place.

I loathe the Dingle's, except for Belle and Zak.

The Tates were amazing.
The Kings were also a bit ace when they first came in.

Of the current families:

The Sugdens have always been good, but they're a bit worn out now, except the Andy/Robert rivalry.
The Dingles have their ups and downs, but there's usually someone I like - mainly Zak, Cain and Belle these days
The Whites have been an interesting addition recently.

Not sure how I feel about the rest.

Val and Alicia leaving has left a huge hole in the Pollard-Metcalfes.
Tired of the NuBartons but maybe Emma will stir things up.
I like some of the Sharma Drama, but Jai's become a bit of a cartoon, and I think Georgia is missed as well.

I like the Dingles. Because there' so many of them my feelings about them as individuals are very mixed, but I like or at least enjoy watching Cain, Moira, Chas,Charity,Debbie,Zak, Belle and the way that these characters always forgive and look out for each other. There really does seem to be a bond between them, and Cain being my fav character tips their balance so I can forgive them for Aaron, Sam, Lisa and Marlon.

I also like the Sugdens and Thomases ( for much the same reason as the Dingles, t feeks like they care) Wyldes ( apart from Nathan), I liked the original Barton family unit - they were very warm and fun.

I liked the Kings but more as individuals than as a family unit, although Nico, Jimmy, and Angel are good entertainment value.

Couldn' t care less about the Spencers as a family. The Sharmas as a family are like something out of Lord of the Flies these days. The new Bartons - well, James is nice and I like Emma, Pete and Finn but they still seem a bit like a random group of people flung into a scene together.

I can' t remember the Windsors - I missed a lot of their early years but Viv set my teeth on edge, so that would have definitely worked against them.

I like and dislike individuals from every family, so I can't really say to be honest.

The Kings:
They were a breath of fresh air in early 2004 and one of the reasons why the 2004 - 2007 era of Emmerdale was so popular. Family matriarch Tom was played brilliantly by Kenneth Farrington and it was a real shame he decided to leave after just under three years. Jimmy, Sadie and Matthew were really good villains (until they turned Jimmy into a comedy character) and Matthew was hilariously cold at times. Max and Carl were both the "nice" brothers until Carl killed Tom and became a villain. I always found them extremely watchable (especially during their feuds with the Sugden and Sinclair families.) The show isn't the same without them.

The Sugdens and Tates were very good aswell and I do like the White family at the moment. Lawrence, Chrissy, Lachlan and Robert work well as a very dysfunctional family.

The Wyldes and Maceys were terrible.

Really agree on the Kings, but I think you mean patriarch - unless there's something we never realised about Tom.

The King era was one of my absolute faves.

Of the Wyldes, I only liked Natasha, who was admittedly ace.

I loved Declan, but the Macey's weren't a great Home Farm family. I do miss him and his glamping site.

The glamping site and Home fields - cornerstones of the Macey Empire

Oh good times. I loved all the stuff with paying the builder to re-bury the body, and the sassy copper woman sniffing round, and Declan in meltdown over his Festival.

I really do miss ole' Tufty Head. He was hot with Charity as well.
