I have just purchased a WD Mycloud and am extremely pleased with it. All my home devices, TV, iPad, desktop and my mobile devices iPhone, Nexus 7 plus my works PC can access inside or outsides the home. But not my Nokia 620 with Windows 10 - no app written for it.

Next year I retire and will have to give back my iPhone 6+ so will need to purchase one for myself and I will not spend the kind of money that Apple demand. Of the other 2 operating systems, Windows 10 is far slicker than Android and almost on a par with iOS (please no discussion on this - I've used all 3 and it's my opinion - I don't care about yours). But the truth is there are just not the apps available for the Windows platform. This is just one more that I cannot use on the 620.

I am waiting and hoping that Microsoft's promise of easy porting of apps to the new platform will help increase the total number of apps available for it. I have Windows 10 installed on the 620 - it's dreadfully slow but shows what the new platform will do - and I like it.

But I will have leave aside all prejudices and purchase a phone that will do the job I want it to and, given the above it looks likely to be an Android phone. Unless Microsoft come up with the goods. On this I welcome advice and opinion.

I agree with you, Windows Phone is slick and easy to use, it's just totally hamstrung by a lack of specific apps that many people use.

It just can't be considered as a main device by any serious user until MS somehow get all the app developers to produce a WP app as well as iOS and Android.

The issue is that for app developers it's really hard to make money. The Apple and Google app stores are saturated with apps, there is an enormous market place there with probably 95% of the entire smartphone market covered by those two operating systems. The remaining 5% of the market is made up of the rest which includes various varieties of Windows Phone devices, and the last vestiges of BlackBerry.

Given that it's really hard to get people to actually buy apps - there's a huge expectation on the part of the public that everything should be free, and that professional developers have homes and families and lives to pay for, it makes sense that they will always go to the platforms with the biggest markets.

In the case of a company like Western Digital, where they're making accompanying apps to support their storage products, they're not making money from the apps, so it's a cost to them to develop them. They're not going to lay out extra money to get apps developed for a tiny fraction of the smartphone market. It's just not worth their while. If you need a guaranteed selection of supporting apps then in my opinion, Windows Phone still isn't a reasonable choice. There's a good reason why BlackBerry have just made an Android OS device!

Can I ask what made you choose a MyCloud ?

If you'd looked at the Synology range of devices, you'd have found that their full suite of apps are available on Windows Phones. The DS Video app is particularly nice if you're looking for a netflix-style app to play movies and tv programs.

This is a screen grab of what you'd see on the handset ..

If folk are going to start listing apps that are not available on Windows Phone... well, it's going to be a very long list!

Windows mobile 7/8/10 phone, or whatever it is called this week, is only usable as a second device. I have tried to live with it full time but it is just painful. But if you DO insist on going that way then you have to see if something works with it before you sign up/purchase something. Do that and it becomes a lot more pleasant.

I'll give you some advice on how a forum works, pal. People go on a forum to exchange ideas, give and ask for advice and express opinions. You do not tell us if we can or can’t debate something. And if you don’t want your thread to degenerate into the usual bollocks then don’t light the bloody blue touch paper in the first place. OK?

Unfortunately Microsoft have put their Android app support on hold: http://www.gsmarena.com/microsoft_co...news-15053.php

Not so long if they only list useful apps you actually need.

Actually it would be quite a long list for me, none of the Sky apps are on WP, so no Sky+, no SkyGo, no SkyNews app, Google don't like WP, so no Maps, no Gmail, no Google Drive apps, my bank doesn't really like WP, so just a wrapped up mobile web page pretending to be an app, YouTube don't like WP, so again a wrapped up mobile page.

Flickr and Instagram might have an app, but both are ancient and buggy and missing many features on iOS and Android, Flickr announced in 2014 there would be no further app development for WP, who knows what's happening with Instagram, has it been updated in the last 18 months on WP?

"... no Gmail. "

Google Mail is in Lumia Denim 8.1 and works well.

There's an Instagram Beta, rated as four star by 30,506 users. I haven't tried it.

"But I will have leave aside all prejudices and purchase a phone that will do the job I want it to and, given the above it looks likely to be an Android phone. "

This stuff is evolving all the time. The new Blackberry Priv is reviewing well, as are the Wiley Fox (sic) Android phones. And Android can be made into anything you want with Nova Launcher, and others. But it is a devourer of privacy.

It's too easy to be sucked into the tyranny of smartphone addiction. Windows Phone works well for me but I'm tied to a desktop PC all day, so I don't need the apps. Others do, and WP doesn't yet have them.

I use a desktop PC and laptop all day too so a Windows Phone fits perfectly into the ecosystem. And the Win10 mobile beta makes my phone run even smoother. I understand they're might not be enough apps for some, but as a business user it's perfect

This would be a game changer though.

Quite. It worked well for me. The only downside is the face-activated caller-on hold feature. It may be my face, but I've found that I get on better with a £28 Bl*ckB*rry Curve, so that's my 'new' business phone. The Windows phone is relegated to idiot stuff: FarceBook, Twitter, etc.
