As title, debating whether or not to change to Android, probably won't but just wondered is phones like the note 4 still getting the latest versions of Android? I know it's got lollipop right now but what about the next update etc?

And if it's not I believe there's still ways of upgrading through rooting right?

Thanks

Samsung are supposed to be testing the Note 4 with Marshmallow. Whilst this does not guarantee it will be updated it means they are thinking about it. Samsung are a bit hit or miss with updates (mostly miss). If you want an speed updates then Google Nexus devices are your best bet.

Motorola and LG aren't far behind, merely weeks in some cases.

To add Samsung flagships tend to be updated for around 2 years from their launch date, it will receive Marshmallow at some point. Given how long it took them to get Lollipop onto it, you could be waiting 6 months.

I have the S6 Edge and even I aint holding out my hopes, tbf since 5.1.1 it works quite well.... I am in no rush for 6.0

The Note 4 will probably get 6 but probably non of the . releases that come after, my Note 3 got 5 but not 5.1 which would probably have fixed a lot of the issues that 5 had.

Note 4 is getting Android 6. It's already been confirmed.

One site over the weekend reckons it may get it in December, shortly after the S6.

The first flash ROM for Galaxy Note 4 with Marshmallow is already available to download if you're rooted.

A beta is currently doing the rounds, said to be very buggy. I suspect Samsung won't want to make a repeat of the Lollipop upgrades by releasing a build that ran through battery in less than 2 hours. I would presume this release will be tested properly before release.

Yes same story with my S4, Released 5 that is well know to be buggy as hell hence why Google released the fixes, sadly Samsung decided not to release the fixes so the S4 is stuck on the buggy 5.0.1

Yes rooting, installing a custom recovery and then flashing a custom ROM is always an option on Android. But before you disappear down that rabbit hole consider this:

- You will invalidate your warranty and quite likely trip Knox (Samsung’s proprietary security system). Not a problem if all goes well though. You have to be thick (and I mean act really stupidly) to break a most phones, just read the instructions and if you are not sure ask before going ahead.
- If you flash a Samsung based ROM (i.e. one based on the existing Note 4 firmware) then you will keep all the Samsung stuff that makes a Note good - multi window, full SPen function, full camera drivers etc. But of course you will be stuck on the same version of Android as a stock Note.
- If you flash an AOSP based ROM (Android Open Source Project) like Liquid Smooth, Omni or CyanogenMod you will probably be on the very latest version of Android. Great. But it will be buggy, have worse battery life, won’t support all the nice Note stuff above (but will come with some great new features) and will have significantly worse camera performance.

I never recommend one way or another on custom ROMs and I personally enjoy installing new firmware and have successfully rooted well over 20 phones and flashed many hundreds of times. Just be aware of what you would be letting yourself into.

Might start to be rolled out in Feb 2016 (that does not mean the UK will get it in Feb) you will have to wait for network approval which will take even longer. Late Spring or early Summer 2016 seems likely.

Brings back terrible memories of when I had a Sony Xperia phone. iPhones all the way for me since and even my oldest iOS devices are still getting new iOS releases.

Network approval? Even if the phone is unlocked?

I've come across this before with Android handsets - and I assume the manufacturers sell so few unlocked / unbranded devices, they ignore this market.

If the numbers from Apple Insider are right, there is no money in selling Android or Windows Phone devices. Makes you wonder why Samsung, Sony, HTC etc, even bother.

Yes unlocked phones need to wait on network approval. Sim free phones will get the update quicker. But a few years ago it was the other way round. I have a Sim free Galaxy S2 and the Sim free update was only released when all the networks had approved it

Yes Apple are the best at doing updates. Google Nexus are good too. The rest are varying degrees of awful

Sony are expected to get out of the game by next year. They are expected to try to sell their Xperia brand like they did the VAIO brand. HTC aren't exactly in great health and who knows how much longer they can survive.
