Not only is the data unreliable, but the calls are now too. I missed a very important call yesterday even though my phone was on and had full signal.

That's it. Once my current goodybag expires I'm done.

What are the pay as you go alternatives at the 12 to 15pound a month price point? I currently get 2gb of data and 500 minutes for £12.. I want much the same and will pay up to £15 a month but no more.

Preferably on the EE network, or failing that Vodafone.

I'm thinking it might be time to go direct with a network.

Do EE do what O2 do , though, and give lower priority to PAYG customers?

Not that anyone has noticed, they even offer double speed on the PAYG packs.

I doubt they would offer double speed and then throttle, they would just a BT Mobile and only offer single speed if they wanted to keep PAYG speeds down.

I have never had great data performance on Sainsburys, but I honestly can't tell if it's throttling or Vodafone's shoddy network here. I don't have a topped up Vodafone SIM to compare it to

I'm more interested in call priority than anything. Apparently someone called me twice yesterday but my phone was on and had full signal the whole time and not a peep. They said they got the unavailable message but it was definitely on and I was watching it like a hawk expecting this call.

Usually data isn't vitally important- it's a pain when it doesn't work but not the end of the world. But I don't want to miss important calls, hence the decision to look for a more reliable network.

Skoda actually make very good cars these days, but I take your point! GiffGaff might get good one day, too, but I can't afford to wait.

Although I use far more data than calls, calls are more important to me. When I need to make a call, it's often important. When someone calls me, it is almost always important.I doubt I am alone in this.

The Post Office have some really competitive deals on Pay As You Go.
Their £10 bundle includes 500 minutes, 3000 texts and 2GB of data - plus every time you top up they'll double your credit. This is in addition to your bundle.

They're 3G only and use EE, but you'll probably find that having a good, solid, reliable 3G connection using the EE backbone will be vastly superior to using 3G or even 4G from GiffGaff.

In any case, restricting PAYG would be plain dumb.
These users are paying for what they use. The more they use the more they pay.
So Giff Gaff are cutting off their own revenue stream. Clever!

EDIT: I can always remember years ago, Plusnet had some PAYG broadband plan and it was restricted in their traffic management.
Someone pointed out to them that in fact it should be prioritised since those customers were paying for what they used (even if it ended up being 200 quid a month or something) so in effect it was a premium service.
So they prioritised it! : )

Further to my last post, from personal experience I find the speeds achievable over Post Office Mobile to be directly comparable with EE's 3G speeds. I don't think they're throttling or putting these Post Office SIMs on a lower priority at all.
One thing I found odd is that the Post Office uses the exact same APN settings as EE. Which might explain the similar speeds.

Besides the lack of 4G, I've found Virgin very reasonable after GiffGaff/3/one2one previously.

I think the post office £10 bundle is the best deal of the lot. As preecey mentioned, 500 mins, 3000 texts and 2GB data. And its not like it's one of those no name MVNOs either.

My other half switched from EEs £15 payg deal to the post office £10 deal. The difference being that she's on 3G rather than 4g now.

Unfortunately after her being on EE so long and having great 4g in most places, the 3G coverage actually seems worse. I think this may be due to all those 2g/4g sites. Where we live there's always a great 4g signal because of that and the 3G signal lacks in comparison, even the coverage checker agrees we get better 4g than 3G.

She went to Peterborough a week ago and was on old Orange 3G quite often. It was painfully slow but it would much rather hang onto that than go onto edge for data.

Anyway that's only a problem for data usage, making and receiving calls won't be a problem. With VoLTE on EE being around the corner though, call reliability on an EE 4G plan will be much higher than a 3G plan.

Skoda? Don't you mean Ford. The Model T is notorious for breaking down.
