It's beginning to annoy me now as it doesn't happen on SD channels.
An example is during Fargo on channel 4 HD when adverts start.
A loud 'bonk' can be heard when I view via youview box.
Also noticed it on BBC1 HD when it goes to splash screen during local news.
Anyone else notice it?

What are you using as an audio system? It is possible that the audio format is changing between the programme content and the adverts and it is your audio system generating the noise.

Can't say that I have noticed anything watching via my LG TV connected to my Onkyo AV receiver or using my Humax Fox-T2 PVR.

I've noticed this too, although I wouldn't describe it as a loud "bonk" - more like a sharp burst of static, like the white noise you get in between tuned out MW radio stations.

I too have a Humax Fox-T2 and it occurs regularly on CH4 HD at the junction between programme and adverts. ("Homeland" being a prime example)

Thanks for the replies.
I am not using any separate audio system, just my TV and talktalk youview box.
It doesn't happen on my other TV, which has a freeview HD tuner built in.

Thanks for the reply.
I wonder why it only occurs during the breaks?
It's the switch-over from 5.1 audio (programme or film) to stereo (adverts). It's a glitch that's never been fixed. This is also the reason it doesn't always happen as a lot of programmes aren't broadcast with 5.1 audio.

I see, so is there anything in the settings that will stop it happening?
Thanks again.

There probably isn't anything you can do about it. Other than buy a different make of box that doesn't glitch as the audio transmission format changes, if you can find one of course. Or persuade all the broadcasters to stick to a single audio format for everything so there is never any switching taking place (which is about as likely as winning Euromillions without buying a ticket ).

Not that I'm aware of. It's doubly annoying for me as I don't have a a 5.1 set-up so listen to a stereo down-mix.

Maybe that's where the problem lies. Does anyone who actually listens in 5.1 ever hear it, our is it the down-mixing which creates the static spit?

It is probably more to do with changing the codec format from 5.1 to 2.0 (or vice versa) than anything to do with downmixing.

This will occur regardless of what you are listening on and whether the PVR is downmixing to stereo or presenting the raw audio feed to whatever audio system you are using.

The most likely reason for the splat of noise is that the PVR/TV/Audio system is not muting when it changes codec types so you get a burst of noise while it tries to decode a stereo signal using the 5.1 codec, or vice versa, before sorting itself out and applying the correct decoder format

It's entirely possible that when using a decent AV receiver system that this will mute as the audio format changes so you don't get these splats. As I posted above it is not something that I have really noticed on my set-up. So it could be that my Onkyo AV receiver is handling the audio format change without any obvious audible effects.

I also get this is problem, but I'm sure it's only started over the past few months.
