Some say "You really got me" from 1964 was a proto-punk song

It was written for The Pretenders, but sounds like The Members.

What the hell's going on with DS now? Every time I press a key, the screen gets overlaid with what looks like a blue gingham tablecloth.

I mean that it was written for the Pretenders and in particular, for Chrissy Hynde, who Ray Davies was married to at the time.

I have read 'Your Really Got Me', is classed as one of the first and fore runner of metal.

It's about who popularised power chords and their use in metal and punk music. Many point to Link Wray's 'Rumble' from 1958 but The Kinks made the sound clearer and more riff-driven with 'You Really got me' (Aug '64) and The Who's 'I Can't Explain' (Jan '65) was power chord driven as well. I think The Kinks (and The Who) influenced both metal and punk. However, Sabbath's legendary 'Paranoid' is the seminal protopunk track.

Ray Davies actually wrote Sold Me Out for a film he did at the time called Return To Waterloo , but it also ended up on Word Of Mouth

I don't get what made you think it was written for the Pretenders, as they have never sang that song

Also Ray Davies never married Chrissie Hynde...... they only went out for a couple of years and had a daughter

Digressing.

In my opinion the guitar solo on, "All Day and All of the Night," must go down as one of the worst in the history of pop.

I think it is accepted that Dave Davies was never the most fluent player compared to his peers.

Yes....It's much more punk than metal imo.

I think Led Zeps communication got there first...the live version sounds like the Ramones!. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eC8ASAnzhM
