Hedgehog proof Dog Kennel
Hi
We have a stray cat who has been coming to us for some years, he has a bed in the shed, but does not like sleeping in there when the weather is mild.In the summer we bought him a dog kennel, which is cushioned and has a variety of fleeces and blankets to keep him comfortable, he adores this and has chosen to stay in this all the time. Our darling house cat (who did not get on with him) passed a couple of weeks ago, plans are afoot with our vet to " capture" Tom, neuter him and give him a full health check etc. So until this can happen he is happily still in his kennel. This morning we found him laying on the grass, and his kennel bedding was all over the place, and we found that two youngish hedgehogs had moved into the kennel. They had poo'd everywhere, over the kitchen step and inside the kennel. We have a number of hogs coming into the garden and the twin babies have been coming all summer. When l was there l fed them away from the kitchen door, and they ate and went. My mum is less able bodied, and so has been putting the food for them either on the step or just off of it. We have a plastic laundry bin that we are going to pad out and put under the table on the patio with food close by (for the hogs). What can we do to the dog kennel to make sure this does not happen again. (sorry for the long post) |

Not a lot I would imagine anything that stopped the hogs would also stop the cat, even raising it would likely not help as hogs can climb amazingly well considering their body shape too.

Thank You for your replies, we have fashioned a plastic box about 2ft by 3ft and placed it under a covered table on the patio, we have filled it with fleeces shaped into hog size tunnels, with food placed nearby. Although l'm thinking hay or straw maybe better.
The mum has a variety of places where she sleeps around the garden, and the babies whilst growing up have gone with her, l guess Tom's kennel looked too tempting for them. Hopefully once we have got Tom sorted with the Vet, the hope is he will want to stay indoors to sleep, then it won't be such an issue. |
