I was curious as to why they called it 'zee' <whatever it was>

Kate is British, DW speaks with a British voice (usually), so, why not 'zed'?

There must have been some intent behind it because there are 25 perfectly good leters of the alphabet that are pronounced much the same anywhere in the ESW, so why did they pick the one that isn't, and then used a foreign pronunciation?

It's obviously hinting towards the series finale, whereby The Doctor regenerates into an Amercian woman, invents a 'vibrate' setting for the sonic screwdriver and shares it with River Song.

Seriously though, does,it matter? Don't you think you're looking into it too much?

It was just rather interesting, as it obviously wasn't something that happened by accident, but it's hard to see any point to it.


That's even funnier than your first bit. This is a forum where people obsessively discus even the most trivial aspects of a sci-fi comedy. Most of the threads here would probably qualify for a 'looking into it too much' assessment.

Because 'zee' sounds better and more picturesque than 'zed'. Yes, I'm a proud Brit too, but it just does... face up to it (I know you can't and won't ).

It may well sound 'better and more picturesque' to some minds(it obviously does to yours, and I'd agree that 'A to Zee' has a better ring then 'A to Zed'), but that begs the question that if that is the case, why don't vast quantities of British speakers adopt the pronunciation.

And that still doesn't answer the question why they specifically chose the one letter in the alphabet where there is a distinction.

It seemed there must be a point to it because it had to be a very deliberate choice. It obviously wasn't something that happened accidentally.

Kate is British, UNIT is not. Presumably they use a naming system consistent with international usage, which sadly probably means American Zs.

Maybe they also wanted the audience to feel a resonance with the name of the poison gas used in the holocaust, Zyklon B?

In the episode thread that a poster commented on the use of "elevator" instead of "lift" by a British character. In fact that character, Jac, called it a "lift" first and when mentioning it again moments later called it an "elevator".
