I'm not surprised he wants out with the awful writers pairing Roy with another woman after Hayley. I'm only surprised it's just for three months.

Not entirely surprising. As the show's best male actor, in many ways he's been singlehandedly holding Corrie together for the past few years.

He's more than earned a break.

I hope that this spells the end for him and Kathy and that she leaves taking Nessa and Alex with her.

Every long term character needs a break. Infact, if they hadn't announced this, they could have just had Roy off screen for a few weeks, we wouldn't have even noticed since not every character is in every episode.

I wish David every success with whatever he does in his break from Coronation Street; Roy is my favourite actor on there. I really, really hope that while he is away the producer gets rid of the sisters - Kathy and Nessa. To give Roy a romance so soon after Hayley's death, ditto Ken losing Deidre, is very poor writing, especially as these two unpleasant characters were chosen.

I wonder why the Mirror are reporting this again as 'news'. It was reported 2 months ago that he would be taking a 3 month break to do a play alongside Chris Gascoyne next Feb.

Hear hear. I think it is a dreadful shame the way the "writers" have written Roy in the last few months, first we had the fiasco of the allotment wars, then the hoarder s/l that went nowhere except to shoehorn the dreadul Cathy into the street and now her equally horrid sister Nessa

Soap actors tend to announce a break, then return for a little bit, before leaving for good. Val (ED), Hayley (CS). It's like they experience life outside soap while they are away and it often then leads to a permanent exit.

Interesting that the break was announced just before Blackburn was booted though

He deserves a break. He is one of the best actors on television.

I hope David Neilson decides to quit I cant stand Roy and Cathy together. A ridiculous decision to give Roy another love interest so soon after Hayley considering how baldy he took Hayley's death and the type of introverted man he is. There's no way he would have moved on as quick as he has.

I think David is a great actor and the break is much well deserved. Hopefully they split him from Cathy and when he comes back Kate Oates has a good SL for him.

That's true, in fact it was reported in the spoiler thread.

He should have taken the rest of Hayley's pills and had the 2 of them bow out together. Would have had more impact, and his character wouldn't have been ruined.

why ? it's what happens, people move on, Life doesn't stop just because your partner dies. its nearly two years since hayley passed more than plenty of grieving time

I like Roy and Cathy together now, having her as a hoarder was pointless but I warmed to her in the scenes where the two of them finally got together. Cannot STAND the sister though.

He is hardly wanting out, he is taking a break like many other soap actors (not just in Corrie) do.

And just because people don't like his relationship with Cathy doesn't mean he has a problem with it and would want to leave over it.

I have to say, even though I was never much of a Hayley fan, I do think the character of Roy is a bit lost without her.

Eactly, and I think they've written the romance with Cathy quite well. He didn't go looking for it.

It's completely out of character for Roy.

Have to agree that I dislike the Roy and Kathy relationship.

I wish they would have just kept them as close platonic friends. Having them in a romantic relationship doesn't really add anything to either of the characters and it certainly takes something away from Roy.

More lazy journalism from the rags. David Neilson has earnt the right to do something else those 3 months will fly by he will be back before you know it.

True, but I think that was Hayley's best quality, to show him that he can make friends and love someone. But Cathy is woeful. Whatever happened to her allotment? Or her big house?

Is it just me or are actors taking more long term breaks these days for theatre, family time, reality TV etc. I mean even 10 years ago, rarely actors took time off to do other projects. In the past couple of years we've had Carla x2, Lloyd, Dev, Maria, Sophie and now Roy taking time off.

As for David Neilson, I think we could do with a break from Roy, hopefully the dreadful Cathy and her sister go too. While we're on the subject of Cathy, whats happened to her hoarding problem and house?!

I love Roy and the way David as an actor makes such an odd eccentric character so likeable. I just wish the writers had left it a while before pairing him with someone new. Although Melanie is a great actress I don't like the Cathy character but see where they were going with making Kathy a person with her own problems such as the hoarding. As for her sister Nessa, the sooner she leaves the better but it would be good to have her son make appearances now and again. Hayley is a hard act to follow and I don't think they have got it quite right with Cathy.

When he comes back, will he and Cathy remember that they have allotments?
