She was looking longingly at the Kuran! I think she will either start wearing the hijab or will be radicalised!

That would be a good storyline but I don't think EE would do it. Casualty did however.

Radicalised? No.

She might however learn about Islam and consider converting with people around her scared that she is being Radicalised.

She's merely taking an interest in her boyfriend's religion [presumably in case they ever decide to want to stay together long term].

If anyone was gonna be 'radicalised', it would've been Shabnam when she first returned with her 'thou shall not lay with a white woman' preaching at the time. My two pounds.

Radicalized, I doubt it. They may do a SL where she converts to Islam.

No, I can't see that happening. As Dan said Shabs last year would have been more likely.

Exactl. Who would do it? Tamwar, Masood? They are moderates and even if they were to play it as her going to a Mosque other than theirs which was extreme, i'm sure they'd notice a huge change in her as she discussed matters with them.

Whilst, EE isn't a documentary or punlic information broadcast, i also think it would be a very dangerous thing to do. What message would they be sending out? Make sure your white, christian daughter doesn't date a Muslim, even one that appears 'nice and normal' as they'll end up radicilising her so she becomes a terroist?! Hardly sending out a message to encourage understanding and integration at a time when we desperately need to.

If they do it, it should be done as a straight forward story of her deciding the faith has merits and wanting to convert - which does happen. If they want to add drama, they can have the Carters be worried about and assume that the Masoods have pressured her into it before accepting that isn't the case.

I don't think that Nancy will be radicalised. I think that she is just interested in the religion and in future, may consider converting.

Fantastic and eloquent post as always Kitkat.

Nancy also is a strong character who knows her own mind and so I feel would not be weak and vulnerable to radicalisation

True.

I'm far from being an expert but as I understand it, people that are radicilised are generally either very young (teens) who naturally question everything and want to rebel in some way or Ard very unhappy - feeling there is something missing in their life and our Society.

Nancy really doesn't fit that profile.

I'm not saying they should never do such a storyline, but not with the one Muslim family they have in the show who have been portrayed as moderate for nearly 10 years and not the first time they look at religious conversion - from and to any faith but particularly Islam.

This is the BBC.

Not a chance in hell would TBTB ever dare touch such a controversial storyline with a ten foot bargepole.

It could have been very interesting with Shabs going down that route but that time has long since passed

It would be totally ridiculous to do this. Soaps should be portraying Muslims in a positive and realistic way, to counteract all the negativity. I think we might see her become interested in Islam and maybe properly convert, which would be really interesting, and yes that'd probably cause some conflict between her and her family, but it would be completely unbelievable to turn her into an extremist.

Yes but to show the first person in the show who considers converting religion to become an extremist is thin ice.

I'm nit sure I'd agree that all portrayals of Muslims should be positive, it is iffy to present the idea that anybody that becomes involved with one will fall prey to dangerous elements and be radicilised.

If they had more Muslime characters perhaps they could go down that route with one or two characters but there would need to be a positive counterbalance.

The Qur'an written in Arabic is a part of Allah as the Qur'an is believed to be the direct words of Allah as spoken through the prophet Muhammad. Consequently no non-believer is allowed to touch the holy Qur'an. Similarly no Qur'an can be destroyed - tatty Qur'ans must be returned to the nearest cleric / mosque for safe processing.
