Why the praise for Vana?
She was praised for 'expectation-management' but the way I saw it she seemed to come back on an already negotiated deal?

I agree - she was massively overpraised for not very much. Scott found the job, negotiated the price, and did a lot of the work, but Vana gets *all* the on-show credit because she put on a nice smile when telling the lady they weren't going to give her the full Garden Force treatment in one day? Silly.

she managed to turn something that by the looks of it would of been a weeks worth of work and totally unobtainable into something the owner actually would of put their hand in their purse to pay for
Leveling that sort of garden would probably of needed serious skips and probably re doing of the boundary fences...not a one day job unless you have serious machinery and given the garden there would be no way to get a digger in to sort it out and the rental would of nuked their profit anyway |

Right, but it's not as though she came to this conclusion by herself. They were all there when they overpromised on day 1, then they presumably went away and worked out it wasn't feasible, and she was the one chosen to deliver the news on day 2. I'm fairly sure either Scott or Gary could have sold the exact same line, the woman didn't even seem particularly bothered.

Would be a very idiotic strategy if they had lost the task).Plus the fact that Scott has already seemed a bit arrogant in the past in regard to his achievements, and he was the one who did the initial pitch that got them into trouble in the first place. Also add in the fact that their fees were discussed after Vana's intervention, so the job was not made into a contract as it were until after that (in Brett's case, he had already shaked his hand on a fee to get a certain job done, so was basically bound by it). |

The guys were running away with themselves, she at least was able to tell the woman what they could realistically do that day the job looked good when it was finished, Scott wanted to go dismantling her awning thing and moving walls.

Somebody had to be the bad cop to the overenthusiastic good cop and she did that role well. To be honest, as an American and a snide-sounding woman, she was well-placed to play the 'controlling boss' role. By stepping in to be the bad cop herself she made it seem as if the guys hadn't actually broken their promises and were still trustworthy, they just had to go along with what their nasty boss said.
In terms of the praise though, it's hard to tell from the editing so far whether that was a conscious decision to play that role (as she's been praised for) or if she genuinely is just a nagging type of person who'll come in and try and take over. |

To be fair I think if she hadn't stepped in and told the woman what they could realistically do, Scott would have promised far more and it could have been a disaster. That said, for me she hasn't redeemed herself yet from the week she was PM and belittled and sniped at everyone before laughing and pulling faces in the boardroom when people spoke. She hasn't shown much business acumen so far and has actually been fairly quiet in the last few weeks. She's keeping her head down for the moment, but there's only so long you can do that for!

I think it was simply because the ONLY people who did anything really noteworthy in that episode were Joseph and Vana.
What she did wasn't a big achievement in itself but it DID show that she was thinking about what was going on from a managerial point of view and that's likely to be important to Alan Sugar - perhaps even more-so than what Joseph did. |

That's what managing expectations means -- it's a euphemism for telling customers they will get a worse service than they'd expected (or had experienced up to now).
Not delivering on an already negotiated deal is breach of contract. In that respect Bret acted like a gentleman (although he unknowingly delivered more than had been negotiated. Vana was just lucky she had an elderly lady to deal with. I'm just surprised Claude as a businessman praised her for it. If it had been Claude she had closed the deal with, the outcome would have been different! |

Expectationmanagement is what you do upfront, telling the customer what they can realistically expect for their money, before you close the deal.

and to of been able to of delivered it would probably have sent them several grand down in profit as you'd of needed people and machinery to sort it out properly and if you're going to level a terraced garden the consent from the neighbours to sort out the fencing etc perhaps?

She made a good damage control (and luckily the woman obliged as well)

I have to think that the OTHER team members actually being willing to praise her means something. Contestants on this show are never generous with praise to their fellow competitors and them willing to be so probably means she actually did something noteworthy and we just weren't given enough footage to see the whole problem for what it was. |

Scott was so generous with his praise to his fellow team members even as losing PM they had to tell him to stop being so nice, it's hardly difficult to winkle positivity out of him.

Had she not stepped in, Scott would've made a joke of himself and the task and would NEVER have been able to deliver on all the adventurous promises he made earlier. She was smart to be able to suss that out and express the same to the lady effectively

I'd imagine Selina's probably unpopular on here but I thought Vana was pretty vile to her in yesterdays episode, seemingly jumping on literally everything she said. Even during the last scene back at the house when she claimed that 'Actually, it was you who said you didn't enjoy working with Sam.' The jumping in when Sugar was talking about her during the boardroom with a smile on her face and a glint in her eye too was pretty nasty as was the scene in the café where- after Brett had indeed brought it up even during the task - Selina was singled out for talking about individual sales.

Of course Vana wasn't there to hear that, but Selina's complaint was exactly the same complaint Vana and Brett made when it was they who were involved. |

I thought Vana would have been one of the first to go, really surprised she's still there.

Vana has been very bitchy with certain contestants since the beginning. Selina is certainly not the only one. Yet when around the contestants she likes, like Sam, she seems very down to earth and friendly.
