Isn't that how it's always been? I still remember all the backlash the show had nine or ten years ago, you wouldn't have thought the show was becoming as successful as it did. If social media was around in the early 70's, I'm sure there'd have been complaints along the lines of:
"It's Doctor Who, not Brigadier Who!"
"Bring back Patrick Troughton! This new Doctor is boring"
"Barry Letts is ruining this show! Holmes for producer!"
"Another story where the Doctor foils the Master's plans? How original"
"The writers are too obsessed with UNIT"
"Way to throw continuity out of the window"
"Who is this Jo Grant and why has she replaced Liz? She needs to step down immediately!"
