Why was there no opening credits in this ep?

Mark Gatiss felt that they would take viewers out of the episode and ruin the atmosphere he was trying to create.

Did all those letters have lots of crew/credits etc buried in them? I didn't pause it but saw "Doctor Who" reading downwards and "Clara Oswald" horizontally...

We may not have got title music but all of the characters were credited on the title card at the beginning, a first for who I think. And to be repeated in a fortnights time.

I spent the first 10 minutes of the episode waiting for them.

You can't really have a "found footage" style with credits...

Also the episode title, and 'written by Mark Gatiss' appeared at the start of the end credits.

I see what's going to happen now. A lot of fans are going to create their own opening titles for this episode and then post them to YouTube.

I shall look in a minute. Someone may have already done them.

Some are making a big deal over the lack of opening credits, as though it somehow affected the episode negatively for them.

From my point of view though, it seems perfectly obvious why, with the found footage theme, and more importantly the twist at the end, that the lack of credits actually enhanced the theme of the episode and made the scenario more believable.

I'd go so far as to say that it would have looked a bit silly and disruptive to the episode if there had been opening titles.

The right call for me. Plus, it's only opening titles. I seriously don't get why anyone would care about their absence in one episode anyway.

Thought it was a big mistake. Could easily have fitted them in after the opening scene. Wish they would stop messing with tradition with this and what they did with the credits in death in heaven. I blame mr moffat for this as he passes this stuff for transmission. Just like the moon egg episode. Oh for a show runner who would reign in the whims of these writers

LOL, me too. I was waiting for the opening credits to start rolling so that I could nip into the kitchen and dish my tea out onto a plate. But I was stood there like a lemon waiting for the credits.

When I was a kid and was in another room playing on a Saturday evening, as soon as I heard the theme tune playing it was the signal to stop what I was doing and run into the living room to watch Doctor Who.
Hearing the opening theme tune was part of the experience for me.

God knows, the last thing Doctor Who needs is the whims of writers. It's not like any good fantasy or science fiction ever came out of the whims of writers. Damn it, the last thing I want when I watch Doctor Who is to be surprised by something. If only they would put less imagination into making Doctor Who.

Wouldn't work these days as you'd miss the teaser scene

More to the point, has nobody screengrabbed the thing from last night so we can all play word search?

90% of Hollywood movies these days don't have opening credits.

They could have opened with the credits and have no action before them.

They should've had 45 minutes of credits - would've been more entertaining than the episode!

It just showed the names and serial-numbers (?) of the soldiers, along with Clara and The Doctor as well.

At the risk of stating the obvious, it DID also pick out the letters "DOCTOR WHO" in slightly brighter lettering too.

Same.

Felt like a different show and it was a terrible idea.

The theme could always be played before the very first scene.

Just seemed like a change for the sake of a 'clever' change to me. Having the credits at the very start would have made no difference to the immersion imo, and they still had them at the end.

No biggie, just unnecessary for me.

Ok, has anyone seen tenth planet or wargames? Not first a change to normaly title sequence. And they mentioned months ago in an interview that there wouldn't be one...not really a big surprise

Not last night, it didn't.

I'm at a loss as to why there's such a fuss over this. It was a one-off which fitted the stylistic changes of the episode. No one was in any doubt as to when the show started or whether they were in fact watching something else.
