The same could be said for a lot of TV show's opening titles too, the trend started towards the end of the 90s, eg. 24, Lost.

I'd go so far as to say that it would have looked a bit silly and disruptive to the episode if there had been opening titles.

The right call for me. Plus, it's only opening titles. I seriously don't get why anyone would care about their absence in one episode anyway.”

The episode was still unengaging with or without the credits, lol.

I'm at a loss as to why there's such a fuss over this. It was a one-off which fitted the stylistic changes of the episode. No one was in any doubt as to when the show started or whether they were in fact watching something else.”

They could've actually put the opening at the very beginning of the episode before anything so it dosent t take the viewer out the episode when it actually starts. Its them trying to be clever but failing yet again this Series.

Whilst I agree that they could have done that, how do you go from unique one-off different opening credits sequence to 'trying to be clever but failing'? It wasn't trying to be clever, it was trying to fit in with the context of the story and its format. How pointless to apply such heavy criticism to something so relatively trivial that lasted about five seconds.

How was it trying to be clever? How did it fail?

Because for some people seeing the openings would've been the most entertaining thing to happen that episode while trying their best not to flip over to Channel 4 News.

That's all fine, but you if you're going to quote them, you should answer the questions. How was it 'being clever', and how did it fail?

I don't know about it being clever (different, certainly)

I hadn't thought about it "failing" until I read the post about Mark Gatiss feeling it would take viewers out of the episode.

In which case, for me, it was a fail. After about ten minutes I realised that there weren't any opening titles and then was waiting for them, which, of course took me out of an already not very engaging episode.

Except that they would not have known it at the time.

Anyway, let's face it, such decisions are taken for creative purposes. In the same way that a director will shoot in 2.35:1, or will choose black & white film stock, we should accept that it was the director's choice, the director's prerogative (even if on a personal level, we thought that it was wrong or did not work).
