Normally I would agree with you but Adele is a talent, even if you don't like her she has talent and at least she doesn't sound like a clone of Rihanna, Taylor Swift, etc. She is also British which I am excited about.

...but music is subjective.

There must be one person out there who absolutely hates 21, but that album sold 4 million in the UK.

Sure, you might not understand the appeal as to why said album is so successful, but if it appeals to the majority then the majority have spoken.

Remember this is the same country that made James Blunt a global phenomenon with Back To Bedlam selling over 3 million albums. Now there was an album I didn't get the appeal of, but 3 million other people enjoyed it. In fact, Sam Smith's album is probably an even better more recent example of an album selling bucketloads, but me failing to understand the appeal.

It happens.

Hard to say. The first week prediction sales of Hello were extremely low compared to what they were. We thought it would just about scrape above Flo Ridas record and look what happened.

I wouldn't even like to venture a guess. Definitely more than 550k

A million isn't actually out of the question at this stage. Certainly Oasis' record is definitely going in 6 days' time. Which is ironic given what Noel predicted would happen to Adele in an interview in early 2012

Quote:
“I feel sorry for girls in the music industry," he told the Mail on Sunday (via Gigwise). "They do have a very short shelf life. For instance, Duffy: who? Gone. She was massive. And I don't doubt for a second that the same thing will happen to Adele."”

Oops

Well, he was right about Duffy.

However, Adele is more than just an extraordinary singer. She oozes character and personality which makes her far more likeable, and relatable, as an artist than Duffy ever came across back in 2008.

Being a great singer is one thing. Having a personality to back it up is something else.

That wasn't a prediction though, her second album had already bombed way before he was interviewed. He's worse than Mystic Meg

That is wild. I bet she'll come in with around 700k, may 800k. I don't think a million will happen here though. It will sell at least 1.8m before the New Year.

I wish other good albums sold a fraction of that in the UK these days.

Fell short of Be Here Now unlikely to top it if we're going by projections.

But Be Here Now was (stupidly?) released late in the week so only had 3 days IIRC? Adele has a full week; I genuinely think she will sail past it but time will tell....

Good news is that Kate Bush doesn't agree with you.

Old school throw back that reminds people that they might like a CD instead. While many of their laptops don't play CDs. Yeah. Somehow I doubt that took place.
Out of the top 5 selling albums in UK history, 21 is the only one without a rerelease. 19 was never rereleased either. She has yet to come out with a Christmas album (fingers crossed). So I do think XL knows how to show restraint. Or Adele does anyway.”

wtf are you waffling on about. I just like to buy a CD to listen to the music. Not bothered about what she's eating for tea or if she has money in the bank. Just pleased she has released another fantastic album. Some people really do OVERTHINK things. Your brain must be on overtime

To my understanding shadelsofblack was commenting on Fraxis text... I don't see why it should be a problem for you.

Dude? What the f*ck? I could give a rats ass what she's eating for tea or how much money she makes. Which is referenced in my post there. Did you happen to link the wrong quote? Turns out I just like to buy a f*ing cd and listen to a fantastic album as well. Lol.
You are preaching to the choir pal. I'm (some would argue in vain) her #1 fan.
So go defend her to the right person.

Is that globally, or just the US? US articles sometimes mix the two.

Either way, this is mad. I do hope that we see sales like this again.

Just in the US

Yes, she's hitting 3m+ in the US alone. Looks like my 4.5m WW prediction will turn out to be too conservative . And they say no-one buys albums anymore....

It would be fantastic for Adele's 25 to sell in one week more than every other album so far this year has sold in total.

25 to go straight to #1 in the UK YTD albums chart - needs to sell at least 750k to achieve that.

25 to go straight to #1 in the US YTD album chart - needs to sell more than 1.74 million to achieve that.

Difficult to tell with the UK, but I can see Adele easily clearing 2 million in the US, and I really hope 25 does smash that sales record and takes over the titled held by N'Sync.

But buying albums now means CDs and Vinyl records. HMV has many copies of 25 on vinyl and CD. Paying for digital files that are already free online is not "buying an album". I know most people under 25 years old wont know that, but it's not "buying and album".
shadesofblack
21-11-2015
Dude you keep saying that. Because people can download the album FOR FREE illegally, the fact that she is selling 900,000 copies in the first day on US ITunes is insane!! Can you not see how this is more impressive than anything that NSYNC did in the height of record sales? People can get 25 for free and yet they are still buying it! Only Adele.

even at the 3rd time of you saying this, i'm not convinced anyone has the faintest idea of what you're getting at
hazydayz

The difference with N SYNC is that people actually went out and bought the album physically. They didn't pay money for free invisible digital files they can't hold or touch.

How can you honestly tell someone you own this album if you don't have it on CD or vinyl? What you gonna do? Show them a screenshot on your phone or ipad? That's not owning an album. Owning an album is holding something in your hands that you can touch and feel and play and put on a shelf. Not an invisible computer file that is free.
shadesofblack

You do know that many people don't own a CD player anymore? Most laptops don't have them anymore? You get that right? And you understand that people are paying $12 for "nothing in their hand"? If this is your reasoning than there is no reasoning here. This isn't 1990 anymore.
