Since I've had the Youview box I've had a lot of problems with Chromecast. When I press the Chromecast icon on my tablet it shows "Youview 1980" as well "TV" (what I called the Chromecast), but quite often the TV disappears and so I can't use it. The only way out of it I've found is to pull the power cable from the Chromecast, and then 'Force stop' the app I'm using on the tablet. After that it detects it again and works fine.

Anyone else have this?

Are both the YouView box and Chromecast connecting via WiFi? If so it is probably some conflict going on with the set-up of the WiFi connection on each device. One possible solution might be to assign a fixed IP address to each device so that you no longer get any conflict.

Same router, but the Youview box is connect via cable. I'd given fixed IPs to everything except the Youview box, which I've done now, but it wasn't likely to change.

The way that Youview appears as a chromecast device (even though it doesn't work) suggests it must be something to do with the way these things are advertised on the network. Perhaps I can switch that off, or block it with the firewall.

The YouView box may be announcing itself as a media streaming device. Possibly using DNLA. Though I'm not sure that DNLA would conflict with Chromecast though possible the app on the tablet is getting confused by it. But might be worth looking through the settings on the YouView box and seeing if there are any options for media streaming.

I mentioned fixed IP because it sometimes sorts out connection problems. If you set up a connection when the destination device (eg the Chromecast) is using DHCP and the IP address of it changes often the source device (eg the tablet) loses track of it. This is a real pain in the neck with network printers especially in my experience.

I think it's mDNS. I can see that the YouView box is using the 224.0.0.251 multicast group that is mDNS, and I've found mention of Chromecast also using that protocol.

Can't see any way of turning it off though.

Predictably I post on a forum and then immediately think of the solution.

I've configured the router to put the Youview box into a separate VLAN, and now the two don't interfere with each other.
