I've been a loyal viewer of the show since Series 1 and I can honestly say I am enjoying this year's show. By no means is it perfect - terrible presenting (although its so bad it's starting to become entertaining), inconsistent feedback and some confusing sing-off decisions (Nick sending Monica home/ Rita sending home Seann). However talent wise I think the acts are great this year and this is the main reason i really didn't enjoy Series 10 and Series 11 - the talent was awful. This year there are great singers who you can actually place as successful artists with longevity in the music industry.

X Factor is still relevant today. Fleur has had a top 3 hit and Lauren from this year is hust outside the top 10 with her performance. Ratings may be down but X Factor hasnt lost all relevancy.”

i watch it because i've watched it for years and hope it will improve , you dont know how bad it is going to be before you watch it do you ?

i#ll be perfectly honest if it wasn't for the enjoyment, and even that is waning, of having some banter about the show on here i wouldn't be watching, the sunday night show i dont watch live anymore i just fast forward thru to get the results announced and thats it

you keep talking about the show still being relevant , its lost 20% of its viewers in 12 months , so swathes of people are switching off and burying your head in the sand pretending everything is fine is a bit silly

2007 was just a mess.

Alexandra Burke won in 2008 and initially did really well before JLS stole her thunder, but at the time it seemed like a fluke. Prior to 2008, no runner up had successfully ended up being more successful than the winner in both the singles and album chart (yes, G4 and Rhydian were arguably more successful than Steve Brookstein and Leon Jackson but only in the album charts).

From 2009 onwards, this is when the show started to collapse. The introduction of the novelty act (Jedward), the deluded comments from Simon Cowell after a seriously bad performance (Danyl's butchering of I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing) and Joe McElderry being turned into Mika after winning the show.

From 2009 onwards it was no longer about winning. It was just a launchpad for certain contestants to create a public profile and then use X Factor to kickstart their career. Step forward Olly Murs (who I honestly don't think was even a contender to win X Factor at least up until the semi final).

2010 had One Direction. 2012 had Ella Henderson. 2014 had Fleur East.

2011 was the last time I'd say the winning act was the right choice, as Little Mix have proved, especially when you consider their third album looks set to be their biggest selling to date. Many pop acts struggle with the second album, and it's diminishing returns thereafter yet Little Mix have certainly bucked that trend.

Still not sure who the star of 2013 was, even though I personally thought it was a better series compared to the horror that was 2012.

If X Factor went back to basics. Went back to 2006. It's probably be back to being popular again, and back to being successful again.”

Fantastic post but I disagree with your last point. Once a show evolves into a bigger and crazier affair, going back to basics will just look like a regression (look at the failed room auditions return for example).

The acts this year have actually been really interesting compared to most years (4th Impact, Seann, Mason etc) but the manipulation and poor format planning (Judges Houses) along with the mess that is Olly Murs has damaged what could have been an amazing series.

Personally, I think when they stopped the room auditions was the beginning of the end for me. I absolutely loved the contestants with nothing but their vocal and 4 judges and think putting them into the lions den with the screaming crowds heckling was when it started turning into the mess it is today.

Like mimik, I don't watch live anymore. I sky+ and start watching late so I can FF through the dross, which is sadly getting more and more.

I've watched since day 1 and only turned off for the series with Olly Murs as I didn't like any of the acts. I do think it's becoming harder to watch though and without the likeminded types on here to have a laugh in our weekly group therapy session, I think I'd have given up by now.

I do think I'm really close to saying 'enough is enough'

Well when the show is four weeks from the end I think youd know how bad it is. The fact you watch it just to ridicule it is slightly odd but each to their own.

also, I'm not burying my head in the sajd, I'm just not that bothered by the figures. I watch it as I enjoy it.

I thought the 'novelty act' started in 2005 with Chico TBH.

He was seen as a one off - till Jedward appeared in 2009.

Now we kind of expect it

Maybe so it finally clicks for people who don't realise what goes on behind the scenes and how nasty the show really is. Even if the comment creates enough intrigue for people to do their own research then it has all been worth while.

Sometimes people go OTT, but the issues can be very close to the bone when you realise people are being bullied on live tv, the public are being manipulated & careers are being purposely destroyed.

That's incorrect. 2007 was not a mess. Rhydian massively outsold Leon Jackson and was the first runner up to be invited back the following year to perform. He's one of the few XF alumni still going seven years later.

Chico was the first novelty act back in 2005 surely?
