Back button?
So I've got a back button on Sony TV (Bravia KDL-42W653A), it works on menus to take you back to your last selection obviously. But how come there's no option on the remote to take you back to the last channel you were on?
Even the cheapest TV's have this option. |

It's down to what Sony believe is a button that will used by the majority for a large part of the time. As a dealer, I can't ever remember anyone asking if there is a "last channel" button on the remote. Eject buttons for DVD/Blu-Ray players was asked for this week (god knows why as it's not like the disc can magically get from the box to the machine without the user getting off their arse anyway!). There is also the issue of the amount of usable space on the remote. They have to prioritise. |

If it is the same as my 32W705B it is the small button to the right of the PROG +/- button.
(Remote control, RM-ED059). |

Does not the Back button take you back to the previous channel?

It's as if the button has 2 functions but only one works. |

On some TVs the back button only works when the On Screen Display is up.

My Humax Foxsat does that. I wonder why? Is to avoid confusion from accidently pressing Return?

Maybe, but most DVD players take so long to eject the disc that it's better if you can press the eject button and by the time you get there it may be out. And on my current player the eject button is on the top surface so not so easy to reach in the confined space of the shelving unit it sits on above the network streamer.

Back in the day I'm sure front loading VCRs had an eject option on the remote.

I normally use a One-for-All URC-7140 universal remote control, and when set up for the Sony TV, the "previous channel" button on the remote does cause the Sony TV to return to the previous channel. Of course, there are lots of dedicated buttons on the Sony remote that are missing from the One-for-All remote, but then I never use those buttons anyway. -- from CyberSimian in the UK |

I also have a Sony TV, and my Sony remote control also lacks a button that performs the "previous channel" function. However, in my case the TV itself does support this capability.

Why useless? The best devices use the Return button to take you back to the previous selection / Menu level and the Exit button to take you all the way out. Very handy to have both.

Yes. Another useful advantage of having this button. Can you hand on heart say you have never had a brief look at what is happening on another channel then gone back to watching the channel you were already on? In fact as a TV salesman being able to quickly A/B compare two channels must be in your armoury of techniques, for example, to show the difference between the SD and HD versions of a channel.

I have an HX and an EX series TV, neither of which has a back button on the remote. However the function does seem to be on the TVs themselves. Both the following remotes will operate the back button system, toggling happily backwards and forwards between the relevant two channels.
RM-ED059, From a fairly new 32W705B. RM-ED009, From a very old 20S3020. |

So just upgraded the TV to a Sony KDL-55W805C, and guess what the remote has a back button. Beautiful picture by the way but you do have to mess about a bit with the settings to get the picture you're happy with.
