I had my hair done a couple of weeks back. I asked for blonde highlights all over to make my hair look blonder. The base colour is a dyed chestnut brownish. I was told it might not lift in one go, which I replied was fine and I'd go back, but when it was done my hairdresser said it had actually worked ok and wouldn't need redoing and they were dead pleased with it. I don't know where they got that from, as I could have cried when I saw it. I paid and left with a sinking feeling that I'd just made a huge mistake.

Two weeks on almost, it's not grown on me, it's awful, all the blonde has sort of disappeared amongst the other colour except for one single blonde stripe which has taken properly, but looks odd amongst the rest, it is nothing like what I wanted or envisioned, and the top is stripey. I feel like I paid a wad of notes for the one small blonde stripe. I desperately want it redoing, but I don't know how to ask my hairdresser, whom I like and don't want to fall out with or make things awkward so I can't go back. How do you say "I don't like the colour" without upsetting, offending or hurting their feelings? There is no way I can put up with this until the roots need re-doing and I can casually slip it into conversation!

It's their job to make sure you are satisfied with your hair....I'm sure the hairdresser wouldn't be insulted, or definitely shouldn't be, if you say it didn't quite turn out how you envisioned and would like it re-done.

Just say that now you've had a chance to see it properly at home it doesn't look quite as light as you'd hoped and could they have another go at it.

I dont think Ive ever left a haridressers happy and why I dont go near them now.. they dont listen are too busy gabbing to me or their workmates.. and not concentrating.. also as Im older they think any short cut will do and Ill be happy or cut it shorter as if to save me money or get my moneys worth.. its not like that.. I want a hairdresser to examine my hair which is wavy and fine so bounces up after a cut making it look shorter.. Ive said and showed them what a think half an inch looks like but they seem to use another sort of ruler, Ive given up on them...

Your only mistake was not telling your hairdresser! Any decent hairdresser will be only too happy to get your hair looking the way you want it to. Just be a little tactful about how you phrase it - don't say "You made a mess of my hair!" but something like, "You did a great job, but it just doesn't look the way I hoped it would - I really wanted XYZ".

If she's the type to "fall out" with you over this, then you should find yourself a better hairdresser.

I have the same problem, fine hair that has a very strong wave. I say to hairdressers I just want a trim about 1/2 inch and in their book that means a good two inches plus. Because I know what length is easiest for me to manage. It has happened a few times where I have ended up with one side longer than the other. They haven't taken into consideration that my hair has a very strong wave. I have had to stop having my fringe cut and just cut it myself as when I have said I want it cut when it is dry and I want it just below my eyebrows they somehow understand that I want it to mid- forehead. Yup given up too.
