Having a bit of a technical nightmare at the moment with my new flat. Television issues, the BT wifi signal seems weak from a neighbour, and until I'm on broadband I need mobile data.

I have a EE 4G phone at the moment which serves well tethering to my laptop - BUT only if I leave the phone near the window. Otherwise it reverts to slow 3G. It's not particularly practical as I need that phone at times near me.

I have an S4 on Three which doesn't seem to suffice as that appears to rely on 3G wherever I position it. I checked coverage maps and O2 was supposed to be a good alternative, but I can't get the 4G signal, and the 3G signal barely musters 1MBps.

So... Is there anything I can do in the meantime to make my life easier? Any gadgets to enhance signal when I've not got my iPhone near the window? Something that might enhance the S4 signal on O2 or Three?

Or alternatively is there a SIM I can quickly get for 4G signal possibly on an EE MVNO which I can top up and tether fast speeds? Bit of a ramble but I hope you understand.

The S4 should be unlocked (all Three devices are now) so I'd say check you can get an EE 4G signal in that next to the window (where you can with the iPhone) and if so get one of the EE promotional sim cards that let you top up £10 then give you 100GB of data a month for two months.

I think you're right.

No other alternatives longer term?

Perhaps but I'm not sure how much more beneficial that is to the phone? Plus an additional large cost for a 4G receiver?

Modems with an external antenna are able to pick up and make use of weaker signals. Yes it's a dearer option but it's pretty much your only once.
