Really? Not Sass? Surely they can't do this. Quite frankly I'd rather they killed the Doctor and saved Sass. She's the heart of the show, which I assume they will rename Doctor Sass.

I've ordered a 'Save Sass' T-Shirt already.

This news has devastated me.

Oh wait, I read the spoiler....phew.

I think the change in tone will be a male companion, or he's gonna have different companions each week and no regular, something like that...

Just watching Graham Norton and Capaldi seemed VERY awkward when asked if Maisie Williams was his new companion. He quickly changed the subject. I wonder if Ashildr will become A companion, and they'll be joined by a brand new male companion too...?

I still think Psi and Saibra from Time Heist would be brilliant full time companions. Alien but both human enough to fulfil the role of the audience's "guide".

Male companion I'm fine with, and Sherlock has proven how two male leads can work pretty well.

A lack of regular companion though is something I'd be less keen on. For me the show needs that grounding, not necessarily to a female, not necessarily to contemporary Earth and not necessarily to the same kind of relationships we've seen so far. But it needs a character that goes on a journey so that we might go on that journey with them and eventually reach the destination - the Doctor can't be that character, because if he reaches a 'destination' it's the end of the show.

Didn't see the interview but IMO it's more likely (this is pure speculation) that Ashildr dies at some point this series and it was trying not to give this away that made Capaldi awkward.

If Maisie Williams is announced as the next companion it would be a pretty big spoiler for Game of Thrones as there would be no way she could film both shows at the same time.

To be fair if there's no full series until 2017 it doesn't necessarily give much away. And Arya's involvement in Series 5 was spread out to every other episode... she appeared a lot less than she seemed to, whilst most of her scenes were also filmed in just two or three locations. Odds are it doesn't eat up a huge chunk of time that hypothetically couldn't be accounted for.

That being said I'm also sceptical of the chances of her actually being the companion. I still feel they'll likely end up settling on someone entirely new, and even if not I'd still say Osgood was the most likely candidate (she'll likely return in Series 10 either way).

There's not a chance in hell that Ashildr is becoming the next companion any time soon but I wouldn't be too shocked if despite Moffat's claims otherwise, the new person has been cast/is close to being cast and Capaldi obviously knows who his new co-star will soon be though.

NO, Please don't let Ashildr be the new companion, please, can the companion just be a companion.

I want a male companion. I remember Jaimie from the early years. They need someone intelligent and independent.

Seconded. I've not rated Williams appearances. Any of them including tonight. She acts like a teenager with a strop on all the time.

It's time we had a non-contemporary companion for once. Considering The Doctor has all of time and space at his feet it seems strange that he always ends up travelling primarily with someone from early 21st century Britain.

I would like an overseas companion this time, preferably from the past.

Don't worry, they will be. All the speculation is just fannish stuff and all the hype is just... hype.

Whatever time period they are from they would still be the formulaic Doctor Who companion. It won't make a bit of difference. At least with contemporary companions it won't jar when they act like someone from the 21st century.

I hope not. She cant act. There is no depth or complexity of emotion on her face;its a blank. And the voice is weak and expressionless. There is nothing warm or charismatic about this actress.

I really liked the girl with a Lancashire accent who danced across the spaceship in an episode with Nick Frost as Santa. She had charisma and complexity in her acting. She could also be fun!

Let me guess; the new companion will be naked for the entire first season that they appear.

I agree about Masie Williams - her acting is very wooden.

The actress you're thinking of is Faye Marsay - she played a character called Shona in the episode Last Christmas. She was fab - I liked her too.

Metro's suggestions for male companions ....

Some decent suggestions, a few uninspired/unlikely ones too.

Only if we get Jack back as well so he can wind her up until she heads off into the immortal wide blue yonder to get away from him?

Agree. The equivalent of what Victorian Clara would have been if let alone.

I hope the new companion is a little less "know-it-all", a little less aggravating and a little more likeable.

I don't know why Moff even bothers, he can't say anything even remotely positive about the show without people going straight for the throat.

Imagine if he came out and said that the new companion was going to be Clara 2.0, I'm sure that would have gone down a treat...
