He has implied to Radio Times the next companion will be female, which shouldn't be a shock really ....

Richard Ayoade would be an interesting choice! Whoever or whatever the assistant is, just make them what they used to be - the Doctor's Assistant - and not the whole focus of the series itself!

I'd prefer an assistant more like Bernard Cribbins - but one thing for sure, don't make it Rigsy!

More Mathieson, then!

I think SM comes over pretty well there, and I like his DWM articles, where he comes across as humorous, fannish and quite self deprecating. (As did Russell.) Strange that some parts of tinternet paint him as some nasty sexist megalomaniac....
