I have just bought my grandson an iPad Pro to take to University next year. Ordinarily I don't take out any insurance on my Apple purchases but in this instance I would like to do so. However, looking at the T's & C's it only covers accidental damage, not loss or theft. Is there a better alternative ?

Put it on your household insurance.

Put it on your household insurance.
Or buy one from John Lewis and get a free two year guarantee.
As above, any household insurance will cover you.

But John Lewis doesn't cover accident or loss. I'm not fussed about the regular guarantee as I can't remember ever having an Apple product break in the first two years (and that probably covers about 30 products in total). Not too keen either on claiming on house insurance as that still gets you in the end with increased premiums. I just want to give my Grandson peace of mind that if he breaks it it won't cost me anything. I wouldn't bother if it was mine as I can afford to underwrite any loss.

Chances are your household insurer won't cover it as they have no insurable interest given it's your grandson's and he's not living with you. Tell him either to take good care of it or arrange his own insurance through Endsleigh or similar.

That was the other point I was going to make about house insurance.

He does take good care of things, but accidents can happen to anyone. If there's no obvious alternative I will take out AppleCare +.

Here's an idea,..you've already bought your Grandson an iPad Pro, lucky Grandson!! next, tell him that if he breaks it, accidentally or otherwise, then it's up to him to get a little part-time job and sort it out himself. He's a young university student so old enough to start taking responsibility for himself out in the big wild world. As for you - stop worrying about it.

Get a good case for it.
Already have the Logitech KB which is also a nice sturdy case.

Ended up taking out Applecare +. One thing I find curious is that the price is the same whether you are insuring a £400 iPad or an £800 one.

One halls of residence I stayed in had contents insurance included in the rent, you could also extend this if you needed more cover over what the policy included. If your grandson is staying in halls he may have similar. Or as said, be able to get student content insurance through someone like Endsleigh if this isn't included or if he is in private accommodation.

Does he live with his parents at the moment then? If so it may already be covered by their content insurance or be able to add it on.

Edit, sorry I didn't read the whole thread earlier. I see you have already taken out Apple care.
