I have an Iphone 4. When I go to download some apps lately it says it can't as it needs to be updated to ios 8, when I go to update it says my ios is up to date. so does that mean my phones not suitable for majority of todays newer apps.

Sadly it does, the iPhone 4 can only be officially updated to ios 7.x.x (7.1.2 I think is the last version of ios 7)).

Was just about to post what sammy_boy just said, for you it would be wise upgrading to the iPhone 5s or later like.

While the iPhone 5/5C are ok for majority of apps now I can see both of them being unsupported when iOS 10 comes out in September 2016.

I'd be very surprised if the 5 and 5C didn't both get the next major release of iOS, albeit with some new features not present.

I would expect support for the 4S to be dropped but the 5 and 5C to remain supported. Dropping the 5 and more so the 5C so quickly would be inconsistent with Apple's iPhone support cycles so far.

I agree! The 5/5C models are quite similar to the 5S - which is still on sale - so should give Apple no problems in continued support for quite some time!

The 5/5C are 32bit, and the 5S and later are 64bit. I can see the 5/5C being dropped faster than expected due to this. The 64bit devices can run the adblockers for Safari, the 32bit ones cannot.

That one seems very strange, the older devices standing to benefit much more from this memory saving, speed improving and data saving ability.
