ios updates for Iphone 4
I have an Iphone 4. When I go to download some apps lately it says it can't as it needs to be updated to ios 8, when I go to update it says my ios is up to date. so does that mean my phones not suitable for majority of todays newer apps.

Sadly it does, the iPhone 4 can only be officially updated to ios 7.x.x (7.1.2 I think is the last version of ios 7)).

Was just about to post what sammy_boy just said, for you it would be wise upgrading to the iPhone 5s or later like.
While the iPhone 5/5C are ok for majority of apps now I can see both of them being unsupported when iOS 10 comes out in September 2016. |

I'd be very surprised if the 5 and 5C didn't both get the next major release of iOS, albeit with some new features not present.
I would expect support for the 4S to be dropped but the 5 and 5C to remain supported. Dropping the 5 and more so the 5C so quickly would be inconsistent with Apple's iPhone support cycles so far. |

I agree! The 5/5C models are quite similar to the 5S - which is still on sale - so should give Apple no problems in continued support for quite some time!

.... The 64bit devices can run the adblockers for Safari, the 32bit ones cannot.
