BT Youview box switches itself on
Has anyone else had this problem?I have a Sony Bravia TV and a BT Youview Humax PVR. I've had the box around a month and so far it's been fine.
But for the past two days I've returned home from work and both the box and TV were on. Yesterday it was on Eurosport 2 HD and today BBC One SD. I had not used the box either this morning or yesterday morning and of course put both devices into standby when I go to bed. It's slightly unsettling to return to my flat and find the TV already on, as well as the power being wasted while the TV is switched on for I have no idea how many hours, and I don't really want this happening in the middle of the night either. I live on my own and only my dad also has a key to my flat but he lives over an hour away and is not likely to come into my flat, leave the TV on and then go without telling me. Anyone else has this happen? I don't think it's a recording triggering it because I don't record programmes during daytime. |

Switch everything off at the mains. Problem sorted
![]() Wonder if it is something causing the remote sensor in the BT box to think it's received a command to turn on and that in turn tells the telly to turn on (if you have HDMI control enabled). If you can locate the remote sensor perhaps cover it over with a strip of black insulating tape so it can't see any infra red signals and see if that alters anything. Otherwise call a priest, you have ghosts!

Thanks, I'll try switching everything off and see if that fixes it. I think I may also just disconnect the HDMI lead over the weekend so that if it does happen while I'm away at least only the box and not also the TV could be on when I return on Sunday evening.
The remote today was actually pointing away from the box when I returned so I don't think it's that sending a rogue signal, probably a glitch with the Youview box. |

There is no need to disconnect the HDMI. That would not be advisable anyway as every time you unplug and plug it back in you run an increasing risk of damaging it.
Leave it connected but simply turn off HDMI control in the menus of the BT box and the TV. Not sure what BT might actually call it but the TV may label it something like Bravia Synch. Doesn't really matter if you can only turn it off at one end, it will have the same effect as turning it off at both. |

I didn't know you could turn off the HDMI control, so I'll do that. I don't like having to unplug it for the reasons you've given.
I returned home tonight and the Youview box was off, but within an hour I noticed it was back on, but I hadn't plugged the HDMI lead back in yet so it didn't fire up the TV. This was after following your suggestion of turning off everything. |

Several months on and the box is still switching on when it feels like it. I have tried all the suggestions above, thanks everyone.
In the past few weeks it's been crashing quite a lot. I'm now trying a factory reset without wiping the recordings. Sometimes it would also only half record programmes, as well as intermittent loss of signal on the Internet channels. I don't want to have to change the box because I have recordings I don't want to lose, so hope the factory reset works. |
