ky has scored a victory over BT that could give it a stronger hand in sports channel negotiations, following a decision by the media watchdog to scrap rules that force it to provide Sky Sports 1 and 2 at a controlled price.
Ofcom said the Wholesale Must Offer obligation (WMO) was no longer necessary as Sky had demonstrated it was willing to offer its sports channels to rivals on commercial terms.

I don't understand this. I was always lead to believe that the WMO only applies to Sky Sports 1 and 2 in SD. But the channels are now available in HD. So either the WMO also applies to HD, or Ky have been offering BT more than is required BT Ofcom.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I don't think the channels will be withdrawn because Ofcom will probably get involved again if they do.

It's time BT and Sky got this resolved. I'm sure customers of both services would just like to have the option of subscribing to all BT and Sky channels. Why is BT Sport STILL not available on Talktalk?

I do not think that you will see Sky sports channels disappearing off BT Youview what I have heard is likely to happen is Sky will still supply Bt on a wholesale basis on the condition that BT sports allow their UHD service to be broadcast on Sky' s new Q box this will delivered by Sky so in a different way to how BT do it themselves

What I think BT Sport could do is this (with Sky

BT give BT Sport 1. BT Sport 2, BT Sports ESPN and BT Sport Europe to Sky for its Sky Sports subscribers

In return for Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports 5 for BT Sport subscribers

Think that is a good deal and good for both sets of viewers!

Point is that BT is currently in a very strong position as the sole retailer of its sports channels. By selling direct to viewers on the satellite platform (with no alternative offer through Sky), they can make their broadband a strong offer (for example, if Sky retailed the channels via a wholesale arrangement, they might try to undercut the BT broadband offer by offering the channels for free with their broadband - thus negating BT's whole raison d'etre for the sports channels) and also have details of customers who subscribe to the channels on a stand-alone basis in order to target advertise BT broadband to them.

This is in comparison to ESPN, who elected to use Sky as its retailer on the Satellite platform. But that made sense for them as a business - it took away overheads of managing subscriptions themselves (just remember Setanta and their appalling level of customer service when it came to cancellations) and also (as ESPN was sold as part of the Sky Sports pack) meant that Sky was less cut-throat with them when it came to match picks.

But for BT, it makes sense to be in control of the retailing of BT Sport across BT TV and the satellite platform, as it gives BT the chance to really sell its broadband.

I make this point often on these boards - but I don't think that BT Sport's prime objective is to make a BT triple play customer - it is to break a Sky triple-play. What I mean by that is that BT want to persuade a Sky TV subscriber who has all the bells and whistles on their package to go with BT Broadband and phone line, rather than Sky. Offering additional sports content for a low price if this criteria is fulfilled is an obvious way to do that. I consider it a blindingly brilliant bit of business thinking.

So, if BT are put in the position of needing to make a choice between keeping themselves as the sole retailers of BT Sport and the loss of Sky Sports channels from BT TV, I don't think it will be quite as clear cut as you are making out. They might consider it best to lose Sky Sports from BT TV rather than lose their key business advantage to Sky.

This would appear to have been sorted out with Sky and BT coming to an agreement to keep SS1 and 2 (including HD) on BT Youview.

With the existence of Now TV for people that want to watch SS occasionally the importance of it had probably declined anyway.
