I see Sainsburys are selling the old version with Windows 10 installed for £160.
This isn't the 'light' version I mentioned a while back, but the version with 32GB storage, but without the 2 full size USBs.
Somebody must have upgraded them from Win 8.1, in order to sell off the old stock?

Easy way to tell is that the old version has the Windows logo key on the long side, whereas the 1010 has it on the short side.

I think the specs are basically the same otherwise though, but it's certainly no bargain at that price.

I liked the old Linx 10, but mainly because I preferred 8.1! I've got used to W10 now but I still miss the swipe gestures in desktop mode. Why did the have to take them off? But the 1010 seems far faster and having three USB ports (2 full size, 1 micro) is a big plus. And the free keyboard is great, very well made and nice to use, albeit quite heavy. (Which it has to be to stop it tipping over in use)

This is probably a hangover from windows 8.1+ Bing with wimboot.

As you may know the wimboot system was invented to allow windows 8.1 to fit efficiently on a small device. The recovery partition and the OS are basically the same thing ie 8.1 uses the compressed files in the recovery partition, decompressing on the fly instead of having them repeated and decompressed in the main c drive.

Even then, the storage needed was still high, so using a 32 bit OS helped.

So the linx was designed with only a 32 bit loader (I believe this can be changed but not by mere mortals).

When Windows 10 came out, the new design dispensed with a recovery partition, and now has a compressed mode and an uncompressed mode. In the uncompressed mode all the OS files are just on c drive as normal.

In compressed mode, the system files are extracted from the winsnxs folder (present in both cases) and decompresses on the fly. It is not that different from wimboot in concept.

The upshot is the new windows 10 footprint is several GB smaller now, and putting on a 64bit version is a more realistic proposition now but the firmware on the linx would have to change to allow that. I guess it was easier to just leave as before, then you could simply upgrade.

I was lucky enough to be given one of these for my birthday a few weeks ago. It's my first introduction to Windows 10, as my PC has Windows 7. I've also been given an appropriate Guide to W10 which I will look at before converting the PC.

I haven't got a case for it, and don't have the keyboard either as I need to wait the 30 days before claiming it. I haven't quite worked out which case to get - I am thinking of getting one that just holds the tablet, as I am unlikely to want to carry the keyboard around with me.

I am confused about the size of this model - I initially thought that it would be bigger than the 10, but read above that it is smaller. Presumably a generic case that says it is suitable for either the 10 or the 1010 is in fact not suitable? I'll have to ask the guys on the dedicated forum, but always feel more comfortable on DS.

The forum is run by enthusiasts with no connection to Linx. They really will be able to advise, but be patient as this forum is much smaller than DS so it may take a few days to get a reply.

The 1010 is smaller, about five mil smaller height and width, and maybe a mil thinner. The screen is the same size, but the bezel is smaller.

The keyboard is good, but heavy, almost as heavy as the tablet itself because it has to counterbalance it without tipping over. I assume it has a big metal plate behind the keys.

The keyboard works well though and for me provides a perfect dock on my office desk attaching one hdmi cable to a large hdmi monitor.
The keyboard/trackpad are sturdy and very productive to use, perfect angle and not had mine fall over, not like those daft surface ones that just don't stay put and not that great to use.

It is very adabtable and works with the keyboard attached and also just using as a tablet. The cutouts are all in the right places.

That linxtablet forum seems to have livened up over the Christmas period. It was looking a bit sparse before, assume quite a lot more have had pressies of these linx devices, with the lower amazon/currys prices.
The linxtablet forum has lots of placements for ads, but many of them show as blank and not too intrusive, so no need for an adblocker, like this site.

Just ordered a 1010b along with a case , screen protector and 64gb micro sd card.

should get it tomorrow, I use a iPad mini 2 but the Mrs keeps hogging it so thought I'd have a go at a Windows 10 tablet

Had anyone managed to partition the sd card and use some of it as a RAM disk ?

Is that really needed on a SSD machine? I'd assume the SSD would be as fast or faster than a SD card.

This is not a god plan. The sd card is quite slow, and frankly excessive writing to an sd card is not great either. If you really need a ram disk, use a fast usb stick instead (speed is limited by usb 2 port though)

OP - why do you need a RAM disk anyway with windows 10's compressed memory algorithms etc., and normal pagefiling to mmc card etc?

keyboard doesnt work out of the box, Windows says USB device not recognized when i dock it into the keyboard

just running a Windows update to see if that fixes anything

any other ideas? ive read on linx forums one other having the same issue

Can't think what to suggest. Mine just worked instantly, but that doesn't really help you... Couldn't be dirty contacts on a brand new machine. Do the five pins on the keyboard look okay? One isn't stuck in or something?
Try plugging a full size keyboard into the USB port, so if that works. If not then it would suggest a general USB issue.

Mine's being a bit of a nuisance.
Every couple of days it pops up a notification telling me that I need to re-verify my Microsoft account.
Sometimes when I go to Settings>Accounts and click on verify it asks for my password, but quite often clicking on verify is enough, and I don't have to do anything else.
Bloomin' annoying.

I only have one Microsoft account, and have 3 other Windows 10 PCs that don't do this.

sadly i returned the 1010b, it wasn't for me, i think windows 10 isn't as quick and fluid for what i wanted in a tablet as compared to an ipad, yes its a full blown pc which wasn't what i was after.

nice piece of kit though and great price for someone who needed it's functionality

I got my case today and am very pleased with it. All the cut-outs are in the right place but it only holds the tablet (I have applied for the keyboard but it hasn't arrived yet).

It only comes in black, so I may put some stickers on it so that is shows up if left on a black chair.

They had the 10 Lite for £80 in store last time I looked. Like the £50 Linx 8 they have, you might have to ask in that the offer is simply not on display.
The 10 Lite has a ludicrously low 16GB memory but 2GB Ram whilst the with 8 is a better 32GB but with a frustrating low 1GB Ram.

With Windows caching a lot I am still wondering how that will impact the internal eMMC SD card technology, the 1GB model possibly suffering wear the most.

Presumably a micro SDXC could be added? The 1010 supports a 32 gb card according to the manual, but others have successfully used a 64 gb card (not sure about a 128 gb one).

128 GB works as well.

I also advise strongly against buying 16GB versions of Linx (or any tablet), as it is virtually impossible to upgrade due to lack of memoryy on c drive. For some reason, MS took away facility to use flash drives as scratch space during upgrades. You can basically only clean install.

I had this problem too on a Linx 10 I did used to own, I got around it by reducing the screen saver time and setting it to blank screen. A really irritating restriction of Windows, though, I agree. Why on earth Microsoft havent addressed this in these days of portable devices I havent a clue. In Android its a native function. I dont think doing that actually turns the backlight off, which means it still uses power, and for me that was the unsurmountable problem, as it would run out of power even if it was permanently plugged in, because of the very slow charge cycle of the original Linx 10.

As for that 16gb linx, that is not good, I agree.
Have done many W10 installs on all kinds of 32gb devives and have no problems with them, but would say that is the minimum size.
16gb is not enouugh and I think the average user would seriously struggle and run out of space with something like the TH2 update.
Not sure I see the point of selling those, as the user who thinks they would get a bargain there would not have the experience to handle it well.

When they were using 8.1 which allowed programs to be installed on sd card, and you could choose when to have updates (and no version 8.2 ever anticipated), then 16GB versions were just about manageable.

However Windows 10 has proved to be a bit of a nightmare for two reasons

1) you could not install apps on sd card on version 10240.

2) that has now been fixed with 10586, but the inability to use a usb as scratch space (which was there with upgrades to 10240) makes upgrading impossible.

If MS reinstated that feature, coupled with ability to install programs to sd card, then a 16GB version would just about be manageable but still require a lot of attention.

The other PITA is that clean installing is not that simple, as the Linx, as with many tablets/hybrids, uses some special drivers not in standard iso, so you have to install them manually (fortunately easy to find on unofficial linx tablet forum).

Summary - do not buy 16GB versions.

Just bought one of these off Amazon for just under £140. Ordered on a Saturday and arrived Monday morning, not even with Prime.

So far I love it, I'm using it mostly as a mini PC with the keyboard and case. I was looking originally to get a 2 in 1 mini PC like the HP Pavilion X2 at around £220.

But for around 100 less I think this does the job just as well. I quite like Windows 10 as well, which is surprising as I hate Windows 8.

The Linx feels solid actually with the keyboard it's quite heavy but I don't mind that. Build quality is very good.
