It does sound more like GiffGaff causing the slowdown.. Can you try a "real" O2 pay and go sim and see if that is better?

I'm assuming you have swapped your sim into the Lumia to eliminate that it's not an issue with your S4? Is the Mrs having the same issues with her phone and sim as you?

Out of interest you say you've been with O2 for years, have you swapped your SIM or cut it down? I have had issues with an older O2 SIM on some parts of the network before even though it was marked as 3G it wouldn't hold on to a 3G signal, it wasn't until I got a newer SIM it got better, so now I use a marked 4G SIM and try and swap at least once a year.

Also the 3g site could be getting more congested so shinkage is taking place of the area covered? It does appear o2 is a growing network in user numbers.”

The cell breathing in some parts is getting ridiculous, I notice it more being stuck on a 3G tariff so I am looking to move soon.

Thanks for reply, the strange thing is I got a Vodafone sim to try today, and that also has the very low speed, I'm fed up with them all, ee isnt an option, but I'm a bit reluctant to go back to 02 in case they're the same as gg now,

I've ordered one to try so I'll have to wait and see when it arrives, I did think going to voda would have solved it but it didn't

Right I thought I would update this, I have kept at O2 who passed this to the technical department, they ran an investigation who told me I live in an area with very poor coverage, the nearest mast is over 9km and they can do no more for me. They passed me to customer service to "discuss my contract" obviously discuss letting me out of contract but CS wont budge. Use O2 Tugo is the only option. Any suggestions?

I've never dealt with o2 personally so I can't say specifically, but I'd suggest maybe trying getting them to budge on the Signal Booster box or asking them why their coverage map displays full coverage for that area, I know its not a guarantee but that would be my suggestion.

9km is a long way for signal to travel but in a rural area it's probably not impossible if there are no hills in the way on 900MHz.

O2 say they have a set distance they allow, 9KM is outside that distance, they didn't tell me what the distance was. Yes I have hills in the way. But whats odd is it was working OK, something has happened to kill the signal but nothing at their end apparently so unless some large building or something went up,

Right another update on this. Network support contacted me today, after carrying out tests they said they are surprised I ever had signal to begin with. I was passed to customer support who said best they can do is wave the air time contact and I pay the price of the handset which is £200, I said I will return handset then they said no can do. Is this a good deal or not?

I think it's an OK deal . If you like the handset then you could then get a SIM Only on a network that does serve your house (assuming there is one) or you could sell the handset on eBay or the like.

Do you want to keep the phone? £200 sounds like an okay deal, depending on the model of the phone, provided they get it unlocked first.

When I was in a similar situation with 3 they just let me out of my contract with no penalty and arranged for the phone to be collected.
