Turkey stirring the pot vs Russia
RepublicOfYorks

http://atimes.com/2015/11/turkey-get...itory-finally/

Quote:
“The cloud of uncertainty is lifting about any new directions of Turkish policies on Syria following the parliamentary elections three weeks ago, which led to a great political consolidation by President Recep Erdogan. The policies will run in the old directions – regime change in Syria – as per Erdogan’s compass, which was set four years ago, but they will be vastly more visible in the ‘kinetics’.

That is the assessment one can make regarding the extraordinary demarche made by Turkey on Friday threatening Russia with “serious consequences” unless the latter ended this military operation (air strikes) “as early as possible” in northern Syria close to the Turkish border inhabited by the Turkmen tribes. Importantly, the Turkish threat was generic in character and not specific to any particular incident.”

Article goes on to say that Turkey wouldn't be so bold unless they thought the US 'had their backs'. Also suggests that a 'no-fly zone' is being prepared by Turkish and US forces on the quiet, despite what Obama says.

It's getting pretty worrying. I really wish Turkey was not a member of NATO. The thought of going into WW3 to defend that lot, who shouted 'Allahu Akbar' during a silence for Paris at their own football international, is sickening. But Erdogan and co seem off their heads, they seem quite prepared to provoke a confrontation with Russia and drag the rest of us in.

Following the UN security council agreement on IS one would hope the US & Russia might actually co-operate on that and put Assad on the back burner for the time being.

I think this resolution has shaken Turkey though, and they are clearly trying to create something out of nothing. Speculation that Turkish Delboys gain a lot from oil sold by ISIS for starters, I wouldn't be surprised.

And people talk about Russia's illegal occupation of Crimea and Donbas, fair enough, but nobody mentions the illegal occupation of northern Cyprus, complete with a fake 'independent republic' that nobody recognizes, just like DPR/LPR. This should've disqualified them from NATO membership 40 years ago, we should have backed the Greek Cypriots to the hilt on that.

Totally agree.

The Russian ambassador to Turkey has just been gunned down.
The gunman shouted 'Aleppo' and 'Alluah Akbar' as he fired apparently - shooting the ambassador in the back around 5 times.

There are photos online of the assassin standing over the body of the Russian Ambassador pointing up to the heavens - as is the habit of moderate rebels when professing their religious manifestos.

Did you see the BBC article?

Video of the event shows Mr Karlov making a speech when gunshots ring out.

The camera pulls back to show a smartly dressed gunman, wearing a suit and tie, waving a pistol and shouting.

He can be heard yelling "Don't forget about Aleppo, don't forget about Syria" and uses the Islamic phrase "Allahu Akbar" (God is great").

It then goes on to say...

It is too early to know the motives of the attacker, who has not yet been named.

There are videos online of the actual assassination. What happened is totally clear. The assassin shot Karlov from behind as Karlov was giving his speech. There was no warning. The minute he was shot repeatedly, the assassin started yelling and shouting Alluah Akbar continuously. This is clearly a man angry at the rebel defeat in Aleppo - so that rules out ISIS. It seems he is one of the moderate rebels Cameron and Obama had trouble identifying but not trouble supporting.

I didn't realise forum members here wrote the articles on the BBC news website.

Supposedly the assassin is a Turkish police officer. Hence the suit and carrying arms.

The picture on the BBC News site looks like Sasha Baron Cohen...

Indeed, seems he is a Turkish police officer. He said ''we' die in Aleppo, you die here.'

Looks bad for Turkey, but as long as they are in NATO, they can pretty much do as they please.

Hardly surprising that in a country that big there's not a few ISIS fans, or just Sunni moslems who want revenge for Russian warcrimes against Syrian Sunni moslems.

Turkey under Erdogan though , as a state, seems to change policy daily. Its been drifting away from Europe and NATO, and upset NATO last week by appointing a batch of pro-Russian generals - to replace some removed after the coup. NATO was worried Erdogan was following the example of the nutjob leading the Phillipines, and backing a fellow dictator like Putin, as a rsponse to western criticism of his human right's policies. Now it looks like the entente with Russia may be off again.

Turkey isn't as well equipped as Israel , but its too tough a nut for Putin to take on - even with much of its officer corp in jail. Its got a big airforce, and army, and more than enough navy to sink anything Russian in the Med. Things may sound heated for a while though.

Doesn't seem the man was ISIS tbh. ISIS are not constantly quoting Aleppo as a travesty for example. They are more concerned atm with Turkey taking Al-Bab and bombing it every day and indeed the Kurds encroaching on Al Raqqa. This assassin seems more allied to the rebel movement in Syria Erdogan and the West supports.
