I have a Microsoft Lumia 535 (unlocked), and i'm a little tempted to upgrade to Windows 10 mobile through the Insider Program with the latest release of the OS, the current version is the one installed on the new Lumia 950/950xl phones.

However, has anyone seen anything about when we are likely to see an official release? Am I at some point going to be able to get the update by going to settings and selecting "phone update" or is the insider program the only way for the foreseeable future?

The 535 will get the update "a few weeks after the official release". If this is your main device then I would wait as the insider preview is still fairly beta.

You can try W10 via the Insider program and if it's not to your liking you can reset the phone with the Windows Recovery Tool.

It's a long process though.

The 535 is on the list of Windows 10 handset upgrades coming 'soon' . The date may be carrier dependent for your handset.

Given that W10 is an evolving infrastructure, what you get this year in the early upgrades might not be what you get next year.

I would wait as well, tried Windows 10 but it was buggy, forced close a lot and wouldn't let me install certain apps, went back to 8.1.

My phone isnt locked to any carrier, so will the update just come through the "update phone" ? Thanks for responses.

Yes.

I run a couple of Lumia 1020s and I haven't joined in the insider program. Reliability is key for me and it just wasn't worth it. Still thinking I'll get a 950XL at some point, probably in the new year.

Not sure if affects mobiles but MS have pulled PC version TH2 10586 from all it sites this weekend but no reasons given yet. Speculation is a major security breach, or so many issues they could not continue with it. Odds are it will affect mobile version though.

Lots of MS people sweating about their jobs?

As always in cases like this if the 535 is your main phone which you rely on then best to steer well clear until after the official release.

My main phone is my 1st gen Moto E really. I got the 535 because I wanted to try Windows, and the camera on the 535 is a million times better than the Moto E, which is truly terrible.
