Aren't they locked into Tesco Online to a certain degree in the same way that Amazon tablets are to Amazon's online shopping and app site?
No, it's not locked to Tesco at all.

There is a way to add Google Play store - to expand past Amazons shop

Don't have a Fire so not tried it myself - but seems quite straight forward

Did this as soon as I received mine from Argos same day delivery. Really Simple, was done in about 10 minutes

Maybe "locked" was the wrong word to use. Is the OS not tweaked to encourage you in the direction of shopping at Tesco Online?

Did this last night. Really easy took around 10 mins. For £35 you really can't go wrong with this tablet.

Nope. The tesco apps are preloaded and all accessed via a T icon on desktop or app drawer and that's it. You aren't prompted or encouraged to use them at all (install apex or nova launcher and you can hide them all anyway) Other than that it's pretty much stock android. You don't have to use any tesco service you don't want to, they are just installed in case you wish to. It has the Google play store just like the nexus etc. It has also just been pushed the Lollipop upgrade which works perfect.

Not brand new from Tesco but plenty on a certain auction site if prepared to take risk

The Hudl 2 is OK, but it's not worth paying over the odds for a second hand model.

The new 7 inch Kindle at £37 is the new bargain basement tablet.

They are excellent value for money, especially with the option to add an 128gig sd card. Just don't expect iPad or similar quality. I bought the children's equivalent for my son (same tablet with extras), and it does everything you need, although not wonderful screen quality. You can't go wrong for the cost.

Pity, it was on sale at Argos for £35 last week (just got one) but has gone back up it seems to original price.

Fine if you are happy with the Amazon appstore and associated infrastructure instead of Google's. Pain in the arse if you aren't.

And does the Kindle have a GPS?

£79 a year for unlimited music and video? Yes thank you.

Like most tablets without a SIM, no it doesn't have GPS.

Not what I want a tablet for, oddly enough.

The Hudl2 did. So did the Nexus 7. Again, an absolute requirement for a tablet for me. We don't all want the same thing.

I still stick by the Lenovo Yoga 2 as a brilliant, relatively inexpensive tablet. The specs are excellent. I bought one, and its fab. Currently a bargain at £159

Had one of those - didn't like it at all. Found it a bit slow and the screen never looked great either.

Did you pay more for yours, and was it the same 10" model? (There are a good few variations). I find it excellent for the price, although slightly prefer my kindle hdx 7" screen quality. I upgraded to lollipop as soon as I got it, and have had zero problems. Best investment I've made this year.

It was the same one - although paid £200 for it - although that was a few months ago. swapped it out for a Windows Linx 10 which I found found better to use.

It could be Lollipop has made a difference to it as when I had mine it was not available but 'coming soon'

Actually, this could be on my list. Much better screen than the one I posted above.

Thanks everyone like I said he doesnt want it for anything like FB or games just for looking up things for work. He did tell me last night that he doesnt want anything for Christmas aslong as I dont get a flaming walking stick off him everything should be ok lol.
Please post here at Christmas and let us know if you get a walking stick and what you did with it when you opened it

Good luck with the tablets, my o/h has a 9.6 inch Samsung, John Lewis had them for £99 a couple of weeks ago but not sure if they still do.

If you are willing to take a bit of a risk, you can turn Kindle Fire 7 into pretty much a normal android phone free of charge.

Well its that time of year where Im wondering what to get the husband for Christmas
Im looking for a cheapish tablet for him Ive got about £100. Now its not for playing games on or FB he doesnt bother with either of them. But hes a builder so he uses it mostly for searching for wheres the nearest B+Q to where ever hes working. Or looking for supplies

He uses his phone to look for things but its only a small screen so I thought Id get him a tablet a decent size one.

Ive been told Ive got arthritus in my knees and the doctor said ...have you ever thought of getting a walking stick I said ermmm no ....but I could see a throught bubble over his head saying.....ohhhhh thats her Christmas present sorted . The sad thing is he wont think its not a good present to get me lol..

So whats the best tablet...decent size screen...up to £100 or less if possible.
Thanks
Well, if you (or he) can live with Windows 8 or 10 as the OS, you could do a lot worse than a Linx 7. I bought one more or less out of curiosity and was astounded at what I got for my £56 odd. The Windows is a drawback (and especially when in desktop mode on a relatively tiny 7in screen) but as for speed etc it is rather good for the price. so, for example, ordinary web surfing, iPlayer and the rest are fine. But the Windows and its lack of apps and downloading them etc can be tiresome. Still.
