I would argue that it has never been a contemporary show from the get go - The winner of the first series surely proves that point.
In fact (with the exception of a couple of winners across all the series) it has never really came close to achieving contemporary status let alone retaining an edge of contemporary as you claim. It never will do without any original material being performed.
Its an 'all singing, all dancing' karaoke, prime time Saturday night entertainment programme and should be enjoyed for that. To try and classify it as anything else - ground breaking, contemporary or organic within the music industry will only lead to frustration on the viewers part.
It has across many years provided a couple of hours of entertainment over a winter weekend for a % of the UK television viewing public - an achievement in itself. For me the emphasis is on television entertainment (if that's your thing) but have never attributed any significant relevance of the show within the music industry.
Also, a bit bewildered as to why you cite Seann as a contemporary artist within the realms of the show. Aside from perhaps his styling - his vocals, delivery and performance of a song were in my opinion anything but contemporary. Although I appreciated he has musical talent, his was always a theatrical performance and no more 'contemporary' or 'Radio 1 friendly' than those you dismiss as being dated and boring.
