Seann and Mason gone, Anton, Reggie & Bollie in...is it still a contemporary show?

Genuine question. You could add Che into the mix too really in the sense that he's as contemporary as the overnight shift at Radio 2. I get that the programme isn't, as Simon said tonight, to find a specific Radio 1-style artist but surely for the sake of the show you need to retain an edge of contemporary talent and not just have a bunch of contestants who'll pitch directly to either 8 year-olds or 58 year-olds with very little in between.

Aside from Anton, How are Reggie N Bollie not a comtempoary or current act. If you actually know the current UK music scene. Everyone is loving the Afrobeats music. You seem a bit out of touch, Tony.

They're not contemporary because they're a joke act singing joke songs in a jokey way. They're this series' Jedward. Surely you've noticed they're the comic relief of the show? They are in no way contemporary.

They are not a joke act. Both of them can sing and perform perfectly well and put on a show. Their music style is very current and contemporary and that's why they are doing well. Plus their personalities are great. Again, you seem a bit out of touch Tony.

I wouldn't call them Joke acts. They just sing party songs

Their music is nothing like what kids listen to today.

Who let the dogs out and a One Direction cover - oh yeah, it's like when the kids first heard Bowie years back.

Really you'd have to be about 60 and never put on a music channel other than Radio 2 for the last 30 years to think they're in any way 'contemporary'.

Might as well get some MC Hammer back with balloon pants and claim "this is that hippity hop all the kids are into today"

Reading is fundamental here. I said their music STYLE is current. They have to pick songs that fit with the theme are given. Their music style is Afrobeats. Songs like Antenna by Fuse ODG is an example. That kind of music is current right now.

As I'm a 20 year old clubber I think I have more of an idea, Tony.

I'd doubt that very much if you can listen to that Cbeebies act and claim it's contemporary.

And by the way I'm aware you're talking to me, so if you want you can not put my name at the end of every post.

It's the same thing, isn't it?

If they were serious artists they'd sing something a bit more up to date rather than being one step away into breaking out into full on 'YMCA'

Oh ok

And by the way, all because an act isn't to your taste doesn't mean they are a joke. They put on a good show. This isn't the music they would put out. It's the X Factor where you sing covers. Remember that .

Anton I get but Reggie and Bollie are exactly what is hot right now, they fit perfectly into the current musical scene.

Reggie and Bollie jump about on the stage as the backing singers and professional dancers do all the work. They then get all the credit. Bizzare.

There are also other ways it isn't terribly contemporary. Sometimes it's like if someone's nan put on a rave for their grandson.

"What do the kids like today? I know a nice bit of Beatles and maybe some Celine Dion, yes that'll do" To be honest the only thing that's missing is the table set up with cheese and pineapple sticks and a partially defrosted black forest gateaux from Iceland.

Even the choreography looks straight out of 80s TOTP half the time.

But its not "their music" its the producers choice of music. Most of the stuff they are singing they wouldn't touch in the real world. Its the same for all the acts. They don't have a choice in what they sing on X-Factor.

Reggie and Bollie are a decent enough afrobeats act and to call them a "joke act" shows a distinct lack of musical appreciation.

I would argue that it has never been a contemporary show from the get go - The winner of the first series surely proves that point.
In fact (with the exception of a couple of winners across all the series) it has never really came close to achieving contemporary status let alone retaining an edge of contemporary as you claim. It never will do without any original material being performed.
Its an 'all singing, all dancing' karaoke, prime time Saturday night entertainment programme and should be enjoyed for that. To try and classify it as anything else - ground breaking, contemporary or organic within the music industry will only lead to frustration on the viewers part.
It has across many years provided a couple of hours of entertainment over a winter weekend for a % of the UK television viewing public - an achievement in itself. For me the emphasis is on television entertainment (if that's your thing) but have never attributed any significant relevance of the show within the music industry.

Also, a bit bewildered as to why you cite Seann as a contemporary artist within the realms of the show. Aside from perhaps his styling - his vocals, delivery and performance of a song were in my opinion anything but contemporary. Although I appreciated he has musical talent, his was always a theatrical performance and no more 'contemporary' or 'Radio 1 friendly' than those you dismiss as being dated and boring.
