Glowing review from Blogtor

http://blogtorwho.blogspot.co.uk/201...de-11.html?m=1

Loves the music, the direction, the writing, the acting

Quote:
“Finally, there's Peter Capaldi. Man, he pulls no punches here. In The Zygon Inversion and Face The Raven we witnessed new sides to his character but here he wipes the slate clean and dives into a raw abyss. The fragility of his Doctor is shown as is his inventiveness, boldness and, in one key scene, his vulnerability. And then there's the many moments of contemplation and reflection, where you may wonder if all will end well. His bloodied face and hands have been displayed in various clips and promotional pictures, these moments will make you squirm and look away. Capaldi is such a violent force here. A desperate violent force, who we root for uncategorically as he fights passionately and frantically against his imprisonment. It is not a portayal for a "family" teatime show (not that it is any more, of course), this is a tragic performance of Shakespearian fortitude. Nothing more, nothing less.”

The way to do it is have it up in a separate tab pre-prepared then at the point its finished click to post the poll.

'Cited.

Doctor in a strange, ever changing place. No TARDIS. No Companion. A malevolent figure who's face he doesn't see hunting him down. The Doctor in full on anger/fear/vulnerability mode.

Hang on. Deadly Assassin a bit of 2 and episode 3, anyone? Da..da...DAAAHHHHH!

(Well, it *could* be The Matrix. Sure it's been suggested. All possibilities are suggested! The fact I don't have a clue delights me. Looking forward to this one big time.)

Watch out for the thread titles, too. After last week...

I was thinking this exact thing earlier, except instead of a combat-ready Chancellor Goth we have a creepy hooded figure, and it looks like this time the Doctor will be challenged physically but detoriarate mentally, rather than vice-versa as in The Deadly Assassin.

This has probably been suggested before, but anyway... I wonder if the Doctor was sent to some sort of 'virtual reality' place at the end of Face the Raven, like the nethersphere... It's possible that the events of Heaven Sent and Hell Bent will take place in some kind of false/fake reality. Just a thought. The synopsis for Hell Bent on the Radio Times website has made me wonder if what happens in these episodes isn't 'real' but is some sort of trap or trick.

" If you’re not a fan of the show, I suspect this will leave you cold; for fans, though, and particularly those of Peter Capaldi and/or the 12th Doctor, it’s a treat. 8/10"

Well, as a fan, I'm pleased, but it does mean that the show is aiming for a smaller and smaller audience.
But I really don't think that Doctor Who should ever aim to please the fans at the expense of the wider public. Look what happened when JNT and Eric Saward hired Ian Levine as a sort of fan advisor in the mid 1980s...

Doctor Who should always aim for the widest audience, was it Terrance Dicks who said it needs to appeal to 7 year olds and 70 year olds? Once it starts pandering to fans the wider audience will stay away for good. I have a nasty feeling that's primarily what's to blame for the lower ratings this year and I hope that the production team realise their mistake and reverse this trend asap, before it's irreversibly too late. Doctor Who was never a cult show, and I think it fails on many levels if that is all it's aiming for.

Disagree, I LOVE that they are trying new things. Fans seem to complain they want different, then they get different...than they say its too different or they want the old stuff back. lol

But of course anybody who does not like PC/PCs doc isnt going to like 55 mins of him talking to himself...and than it will be heaven to 12 fans. from what all the reviews say(at this point) he does not disapoint., which is not not surprising,

So it'll be like Peter Capaldi featuring in a stripped down version of Crackanory, then.

I never said I didn't want Who to try new things. The team should always be looking to do that. And this weeks solo episode for Peter looks to be a fantastically brave move for a Saturday prime time programme and I'm looking forward to it hugely. But they shouldn't be looking solely to please 'the fans', who are a tiny but opinionated and shouty proportion of the total audience. They should push boundaries yes, but be fully aware that Doctor Who was always intended to be a mass appeal, family show and not a minority interest cult programme.

Its great to see that Dr Who still has room for these experimental episodes like this one and the Gatiss episode. Its always done this, right from the first series in the 60's with the episode that was surreal with melting clocks.

It means the audience has to learn to tolerate difference...and thats always been one of the major themes in Doctor Who....the toleration of our differences.

I disagree too. I don't like the way the series feels it has to cater for everyone, so we get the kiddie episodes. Kids these days are so sophisticated and watch the latest Hollywood movies, They can cope with anything. The show should just concentrate on being intelligent, challenging, sci-fi like nothing else on TV. That way an audience is assured - not just appealing to lowest common denominator. Yes, the ratings might drop a bit, but if a granny in Doncaster had turned off because that nice boy David isn't doing it anymore then that's no problem - she can just go watch x-factor instead.

Couldn't agree with this more.

I'm going to be missing tonight's because I'm at a party, I know I'll be tempted to watch it when I get in but I don't want to ruin it by not being 'aware' of what is actually happening
