Could be the reason why he's happy to here the news that Chas has PTSD? I do think that theory won't come true anyway (well at least I hope not!) I don't think this will be the case, mostly because the show and the press would most definitely use it as a hype story. Lucy's commented that Chas sees Robert and Diane when she's out in the woods among other people/things I presume, so it's all in her head. Nothing is mentioned about Robert going after the stabber after Thursday, and I honestly think it'll be a case of Robert and Andy in the hospital or just back from hospital being angry that Diane has been stabbed and suggesting something, then not going through with it or it being dropped once he knows it's Chas.

The problem i have with it is that it's unlikely it will be out the goodness of his heart, it will be some manipulation or benefit of himself, and so i'm quite concerned if it potentially earns him brownie points with Aaron. I don't want Aaron thawing towards him based on lies/manipulation/selfishness..”
Well it can be seen either way, I mean, it could be both, it doesn't have to be one or the other. Robert's protecting his brother is more important to him right now, so yeah, he's doing it for him but obviously suggesting Aaron go away with his mother doesn't hurt Aaron either, giving Aaron & Chas some space and getting the heat off Andy. Kind of a kill two birds with one stone thing going on. That's if this is the case, we haven't got much to go on with that theory.
You can punch holes in everything Robert does towards Aaron when you think about it, and most things have several potential meanings. It really depends how you want to look at things and how much you take that in your view of Robert and Robert's feelings towards Aaron.
