Louisa's staging
Ellen_Connolly
22-11-2015
I thought vocally Louisa was very good last night but her staging really annoyed me. It was like she was a guest returning to the show, the producers are clearly pushing her to win. She's a contestant so she should be performing on the normal stage like everyone else. The way she came down the stairs and had the judges hugging her just really didn't seem right to me. Don't know if anyone thought the same but I just really didn't see the need for the over the top staging.

Yep thought the same, quite a few people on Twitter and Facebook saying the same thing

Probably the most obvious 'winners staging' they've ever done. For me though, sticking her up on a literal pedestal with a choir assembled at her feet just accentuated how lacking she is in stage presence. They could have substituted her with a pineapple and it would have made little difference.

Well I thought the staging showcased her talent beautifully.
I also thought her performance of the song was outstanding as well.

Head and shoulders above the rest from the outset but hey, we all have different opinions.

If this is what we're getting at 17, I feel her potential is huge!

Looking forward to seeing what she comes out with, she's bagging a recording deal no matter what happens.

It felt like cheating to me too.

If she's such a star surely her voice can speak for itself on the normal stage like everyone else??

I'm not her fan really as I don't like the favouritism she received but I don't get how people can say the staging shows she is how the producers want to win.

4th power regularly come out from the dressing room and backstage areas.

Last season it happened with Fleur and seasons prior to that things similar have taken place

Not only the staging.

Her performance was almost entirely on close-up, Lauren's performance had extreme long shots, where she was made to look a little bit foolish and dull.

Editing has a huge impact.

Well everything is relative. Coming out from backstage or the audience is favourable staging for sure though with the wrong act it can look ridiculous (Frankie Cocozza) but it's trumped by literally being physically elevated above everyone else in the room.

Think of it in terms of the British Cycling team's theory of marginal gains. Everything is cumulative. On it's own and in isolation the staging has only a very small influence over the audience. But add it to all the other little things they do to influence the public's hive mind week after week and it all adds up and builds momentum for the desired recipient. Meanwhile you subtly undermine the acts such as Che and Lauren that threaten golden girl with mundane staging and the death slot (Ché) or mundane staging, long shots and bad song choice (Lauren). Do this week after week with an eye on how the voting is going and it's not unreasonable to compare it to steering a cruise ship - big and lumbering and slow to respond but ultimately eminently guidable to reach the desired destination.

whilst not disagreeing with the principle of favoritism i am not sure why they would be dressing her up like a mariah carey mini-me and giving her arrangements for almost every song like its a big diva ballad is really doing her any favours

Utterly lacks presence
The staging was designed to give her an aura and prepare us for her coronation as Simon's new star

There's no doubt that she is a massive talent but she will likely get crushed by the machine. She doesn't have Ella Henderson's strength of character. They tried to make her look tough putting her on a building site but she still comes across as an emaciated waif. Also why have I not enjoyed any of the songs she's sung? Is it because she makes it look too easy. She doesn't have much stage presence so that's likely the reason why they surround them with irrelevant distractions.
