Hi,

I use a VPN provider to watch UK TV. It has always worked and I got great results using Smart DNS.

My issue is that on Windows 10+smart DNS, and with various browsers, BBC Iplayer gives me the "you are outside the UK" message. On my other PCs (XP, 7 and 8) smart DNS works fine with Iplayer. I therefore think that it is something that Windows 10 has done (using a VPN connection under Windows 10 works with Iplayer). Does anyone else have a similar issue, or a solution? I have tried deactivating all the location settings in Windows 10, with no joy.

Might be connected to this:

In that the beeb are cracking down at the moment.

You say however that "using a VPN connection under Windows 10 works with Iplayer" - so is that not then the solution for you?

VPN works, but the bandwidth can be limited.

I'll give it a while and see if it's temporary

Have you tried using get_iplayer and it's front end web pvr manager?

It's a little steep learning curve (mainly because it's so feature rich) but once you are used to using it it's ideal for batch downloading shows to watch at a later time. If bandwidth is a problem then you can run it overnight for example.

Are you using an iPlayer app or the web browser on your Win10 machine?

If using the app (if one exists... no idea) perhaps the problem is that your Smart DNS doesn't support the app.

If using a browser, it could be a cache problem. Test this with a private session (incognito mode if using Chrome) and see if it works. Try also a different browser in private session as sometimes a particular browser may have issues.

It has nothing to do with that earlier crackdown, as that is long over and was just one of those routine culls that the broadcaster has to do every now and again to show that they are blocking foreign IPs - also because it works via VPN.

Which Smart DNS provider are you using? This can also make a difference.

Just letting you know that I am currently watching the BBC via Smart DNS and it is working fine.

Finally, just out of interest, is there any reason you are watching on a tiny computer screen and not on your TV? Smart DNS works with many set-top-boxes, and some are really cheap and will allow you to watch the BBC in HD on your normal TV as if you were back in old blighty.

I'll try getting rid of cookies, although I did flush the DNS cache (using ipconfig /flushdns)

I have a small PC connected to my TV, which gives a really great picture.

If clearing cookings, trying Private (incognito) mode or a different browser doesn't work, test it on a different platform like your Smart Phone to make sure your Smart DNS works.

Works perfectly using Chrome, I gave up messing about with either Edge and IE after updating to Windows 10.
Got a fire TV stick from Amazon in the end for €39 (in Germany), and along with my smart DNS (settings in router) - I have my Amazon prime from Germany running simultaneously with BBC iPlayer and TV Player apps, plus netflix all on the fire TV stick. No messing, no faffing - all possible with remote control - its perfect.
