and again Aldi is surprising with their TVs

3 months ago it was a 40" at £299, NOW 48" + 4K resolution at that same price.

how can they do this? and 3 years warranty on top!!!

the big question is, is it any good????

At that price I would hazard a guess at "No" But I dont know for sure.

It has the Bauhn brand name. On line comments on Bauhn products are not encouraging, remember you get what you pay for, but there is a 3 year warranty.

So the pain is guaranteed to last at least 3 years.... Fabulous

If you're happy with the picture quality* then the 3 year guarantee is useful. Since it's Aldi then presumably that will just be money back or a replacement. Actually it's such a hassle when a TV dies that I'll pay a lot more for a more reliable set irrespective of the guarantee.

*The PQ may well be not as good as a decent quality HD TV, certainly I'd take an HD Sony or Panasonic over that TV any day.

It does show that "4k" technology costs very little to implement.

What is the situation with Aldi guarantees? They surely won't have this model of TV in, say, 18months.

It might be a pro-rata amount, say £150 if it only lasted 18months.

I recently claimed on Aldi for some wifi headphones just inside the 3 year warranty. I phoned them up and they paid up on the spot without asking to see the headphones.

So great confidence on their warranties.

Most likely 1st gen technology, basically just 4k resolution, nothing more than a monitor. I doubt it will have HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2 or HEVC, pretty much useless with current 4k specs.

Yes, this is just a Full HD TV really. Unless a person wants a 48" UHD monitor there is no point buying it.

And it's probably not very useful as a monitor either.

Still, they'll sell reasonably well I expect since most customers won't be especially clued up on the in-depth specs. They'll just read the headline specs and think they've bought the latest gear at a knock-down price. Good luck and God bless 'em.

I've read it and I still don't know what it means.

I think that what it boils down to is that it will be fine for the overwhelming majority of people, although getting a decent sound out of it probably requires an additional soundbar.

I'm currently watching Marvels Jessica Jones in 4k.

It means it won't play 4k content. Period. You won't be able to plug in a 4k blu-ray player, nor a SkyQ box and get anything better in than HD.

I don't believe you. It would be a dead cert for prosecution under the Trades Description Act if that was the case. They're not that daft.

It's true. That link was quite informative in explaining the DRM for connectivity and the latest versions of the HDMI & compression that 4K utilises and how it's quite likely that by the time 4K is established the early kit will be obsolete.

You might have a case for TS if you really fancied taking it on but with emerging technologies it really is worth finding out first rather than buying a too-good-to-be-true offer of a big HD telly for under 300 notes then being surprised that it's not what the buyer might have expected. How many times has the advice on here been to hold fire as the 4K / UHD specs aren't yet finalised?

Precisely why I said if it doesn't support any of the current 4k specs it would be pretty much useless in showing current 4k content. It will show SD/HD upscaled to 4K resolution and show 4k content limited to 30fps, ie. Limited to YouTube 4k content or any 4k files @ 30fps.

Well Aldi is a German company and Germany ore testing HEVC so there is a good chance this TV supports it.

If you go to the link posted earlier, the Aldi advert only says, connect your High Definition Sources via HDMI. There is no mention of UHD at all.

But would most people still find it very good value for a 48" HD TV, even if it does upscale HD content to get to its claimed 4k spec?
